Ricky's Story
I liked high school, in hind sight. I was mostly in the Ag dept. I did not do well in school sports or academically. I did though learn how to make a dollar.
My first project was pony pack vegetables. Grew them in my back yard and sold them to the local feed store near the theatre in Lakeside. My last project was four steers I raised and sold to pay my way through trade school.
I took the high school equivalency exam and left for more schooling at West Hills Community College in Coalinga California, January of 79.
In the next ten years I paid the bills working as a diesel and automobile mechanic. I became a type 1 diabetic in 82 and I married Deb in 84. Our first child came in 89. A fantastic kid and turned out to be a great adult. The two of us now work together restor...Expand for more
ing old homes. We named him Ian Hunter. Because of my illness I was allowed to attend a one year software engineering course at Grossmont College in 87. Five days a week eight hours a day for a year, plus homework. It was grueling. I learned that I was not as dumb as my high school teachers and counselors treated me.
Due to the economic downturn we moved north to Washington state in 92. That is also the year Marissa was born. What a cute child. Our third, Jonah, a very welcome surprise came in 94. In 94 I bought a small telecom business and ran it, successfully, for the next 25 years. Covid and my poor health put an end to that. Ian and I had already begun restoring old houses by then. So good timing.
