Rob's Story
Life
Ahoy there! I was born in Staten Island, NY, May 24th, 1969. My family moved to Old Bridge, NJ in 1977, where I played baseball, soccer, ran track & cross-country, and delivered The News Tribune, worked at Foodtown (which is a video store now, last time I checked), and The Cutting Board Restaurant on Hwy 516, and Laura's Pancake House on Route 9.
After Rutgers, where I majored in psychology (I worked in a mental hospital for depressed and disturbed kids on campus for a while) I went to New Orleans for 2 years and worked as an elementary school teacher with the Teach For America Corp. Then I studied acting in New Orleans and New York City, and did a whole bunch of off Broadway acting and a couple of student films over the past decade and a half. I have moved around a lot; I've lived in the Manhattan neighborhoods of The East Village and Hell's Kitchen. In 1995, I lived in Hoboken. In the late 90's, I lived in the Irish immigrant section of the north central Bronx, Woodlawn, where I was active in an Irish theater company.
To survive, I have been a horse (ok, mule!) and buggy driver/tour-guide in New Orleans' French Quarter, a NYC waiter/bartender, a "temp" corporate law paraglegal, an environmental conservationist canvasser (for Greenpeace and NYPIRG), a high school social studies teacher in Harlem, a colle...Expand for more
ge recruiter/H.S. motivational speaker in NYC Schools for the Katharine Gibbs School in Manhattan (their parent company C.E.C. downsized me and my whole division nationwide in 2003!); Since January of 2005, I'm the Education Director of a web-based career education resource for teens, where I do lots of stuff, including training teachers on how to use our products.
I sometimes read my poems for peace and justice at Vox-Pop Cafe in Flatbush, Brooklyn, where I also founded a free-speech newspaper called The NY Megaphone, which is going strong since spring 2006. Since the summer of 2002, I've lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, just across the river from Manhattan.
I have a lovely girlfriend, Miah, a sweet little cat, Uma, a cool bicycle, "the blue and white bike," and I drive a pedicab part-time in Manhattan to make extra dough, and to promote clean air transportation alternatives. I'm in as good of shape if not better than when I was on the track team at MCHS! I have no kids, and have never been married, and I haven't had a car since 1993. If I did, it would be fueled with bio-diesel.
I'm a proud member of the Green Party, and a dual citizen of the USA and The Republic of Ireland. I hope to be able to afford to go to the 25 year MCHS reunion, if we have one, in 2012! Or are we having one in 2007? Later, fellow Spartan!
