Rob's Story
Life
I lived with my brother, Tom, and sister, Pat, in Morningside (atop the hill), except for a period when I lived in Oakmont's Bradley Home (from age 9-11), and attended Morningside, Central Catholic, and Peabody schools.
At 17, I left Pennsylvania (&, sadly, my first girlfriend, Peggy O'Neil) to join the Navy. It was peacetime then so I enjoyed just touring the world.
After 4 years in the Navy, I married Margie Sholes, of St. Ray's in Pgh., who I had been seeing for about 2 years after being introduced by Jeanie Fullerton. We moved from Miami, FL, to CA where I got a degree in sculpture at San Jose State. Over the next 25 years I worked on and off for a large aerospace company doing drafting, illustration, writing and cartooning. Margie and I divorced (after 20 years), had 2 terrific kids, 3 grandchildren...Expand for more
and 1 great grandchild (so far). Margie remarried and seemed happy. She survived her husband's death around 2005. Sadly, in 2010, Margie - the girl who I met in a Pittsburgh orphanage too few years ago - passed away in her Petaluma, CA home.
In 1990 I decided to do sculpture full time. Since then I've done quite a few portrait heads and busts as well as designed gifts and awards for corporate clients. You can see some of my work at RobBrowne dot com.
I'm quite happy here on the San Francisco peninsula but I really do miss Pittsburgh and regret not keeping up with people there. I'm not alone in feeling such a strong connection to the place of my youth. Of course, I don't know if Pittsburgh or the people really ever were the way I remember them. If you'd like to be in touch, my website is probably easier.
