Rob's Story

After finishing my bachelor's degree in engineering at Pitt in 1978, I worked for the Department of Energy in West Mifflin for 4 years while getting my Masters in Engineering Management at Pitt at night. I then left the Burgh in 1982, and moved to Atlanta, GA to get my doctorate in engineering at Georgia Tech. I would be in Atlanta for 17 years. After a year of study at Tech, I realized a doctorate was not for me so I opted for a second masters degree and rejoined the workforce and graduated in December 1983. I was liking life in Georgia and hoped to stay and was blessed to get a job working for the Air Force In the Base Civil Engineering organization at Dobbins AFB in Marietta, Georgia where I would spend the next 15+ years and was blessed to move up in the organization to be the Base Civil Engineer within 3.5 years with some great mentoring. I finally needed a change in 1999 and took a lateral, career-broadening job at Scott AFB in suburban St. Louis in August of that year. I really liked St. Louis because it reminded me a lot of Pittsburgh, and the Midwest is a very warm and "down home" kind of place. In 2000, I was fortunate to be selected for a promotion to the Pentagon staff in DC and moved again and bought a townhouse in Alexandria, VA just south of the Beltway. I worked there through August of 2004 when I was selected to attend the National War College at the National Defense University in DC full-time to get my masters degree in National Security Strategy. What a deal!! This was 10 of the most formative and life-affecting months of my life. After finishing school, I returned to the Pentagon Staff in a different job as Chief of Executive Services for the Civil Engineer of the Air Force. I left that position in October of 2006 for a promotion with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency of the Department of Defense as Deputy Director of Installation Op...Expand for more
erations for the agency. I was selected for a joint duty assignment at the Director of National Intelligence in August 2011, but was then selected 16 months later for a promotion and returned to NGA in my former boss's position as Director of Installation Operations. After three years in that job, I decided that I had hit 35 years of Federal Service, had enough work fun, and saw that the retirement route was the way to go. Since retiring, I have been thoroughly enjoying life. I volunteer at a local historic home as a docent, serve the meal at a homeless shelter once a month. am very active in parish working with adults interested in being baptized, and many other fun activities. I'm so thankful for my Federal employment. After my Mom's passing just prior to my retirement, I spent almost 6 delightful years with my Dad, taking care of him and enjoying life together before he passed away rather tragically in 2021. God was looking out for me because in the Spring of 2019, I met a lovely lady who was a fellow volunteer working at a homeless shelter in Old Town Alexandria. Within a month we started to date, and have been together since. Janice is a widow of 13 years with a grown daughter and son. We have so much in common including both being from the Pittsburgh area. We are discerning God's plan for us for the future and are enjoying retirement together, doing lots of fun things in the DC area and in Pittsburgh. We love going to the beach (just 2.5 hours from here) and other traveling and make it to the Burgh about every month or two to visit family and old friends and check on the family homestead which I still own, maintain, and visit. I enjoy having visitors which has increased since moving to DC due to my easy driving distance from the Burgh and connections with old friends from Atlanta and St. Louis. Let me know if you're ever coming to DC and maybe we can connect!
