Rob's Story
Life
I grew up in Plainfield...1969 to 1986. I went to school in Iowa from 1986 to 1990, and I lived there until late 1996. In early 1997 I moved back to Plainfield. After splitting with my wife in 2004 I moved to Romeoville and then to Buffalo Grove in 2005. I have 3 great sons who mean the world to me. I'm engaged and live in Crystal Lake, Illinois with my fiancée and her son. Life is good.
School
I attended Central Elementary School from 1973 to 1979. I attended Indian Trail Junior High School (now Indian Trail Middle School) from 1979 to 1982. I attended Plainfield High School (now Plainfield Central) from 1982 to 1986.
While at PHS I was manager of the boys basketball team for 4 years, I was on the speech team for a little while, and I was in the science club. I was one of the founders of the computer club. Yeah, I know...all really geeky stuff. But it was good times with good friends.
College
I spent most of my time in college at Drake either drinking, smoking, listening to the Grateful Dead or working at a radi...Expand for more
o station playing tunes...or a combination of any of the above. I was a Sig Ep (Sigma Phi Epsilon), and my friends were my brothers. We were not "frat boys"...actually just the opposite...the other frats really didn't want anything to do with us.
I was a Resident Assistant my Junior year...I got a haircut and cleaned up my act a little bit to get the job...free room and board.
I worked at KIOA-AM, KDMG, KIOA-FM and KFMG under the name "Rob Mikels". Radio was great. I haven't so much as walked into a studio since 1995, though. That's a closed chapter of my life.
In 2005 I earned a Master of Information Systems Management degree from Keller Graduate School of Management in Oak Brook, Illinois.
Workplace
I was a professional radio announcer for 10 years, and then I changed careers. For awhile I did technical writing and software documentation, but then I moved exclusively into Web-related design and development. Today I'm a software engineer. I teach part-time at the collegiate level, and I'm currently working on a book deal.
