Rob's Story
Life
Hello all,
I retired from the Navy in October 06. Had a great time seeing everyone at the reunion!
I spent the better part of the past 21 years in Virginia and that is where I currently reside. I did move to Northern Virginia (Fredericksburg) after I retired and I'm working here as a Safety Engineer for the Marine Corps.
I'm still an outdoors nut and that is where you will usually find me during my free time. I still compete in bass tournaments as my schedule permits but I have backed off quite a bit from what I used to do. My latest passion has been bow hunting and I have become somewhat obsessed with it. The other thing I've been doing quite a lot of is seeing concerts...I kind of thinking that I'm making up for lost time.
School
What can I possibly say about Haverford? Some days it seems so long ago yet at the same time it seems like it was yesterday. I only kept in touch with one person from school but in the past couple of years I have reconnected with a bunch of others. I even went to the school's website and saw that a few of our teachers are still teaching at Haverford. I don't think I could ever forget some of Ray Hulse's antics in class;definitely one of...Expand for more
my favorite teachers of all time. Does anyone remember Mr. Sheffey? I now feel bad for some of the stuff we pulled on him.
Workplace
I changed jobs in 2007 and now work for SAIC in Stafford, VA doing safety for the US Marine Corps. It is far different from what I dealt with in the Navy but I enjoy the work and that what I do makes a difference in the safety of our Marines. I'm the head system safety engineer for infantry weapons...basically I'll get to play with a lot of cool toys.
Military
I spent 20 years in the Navy as an Electronic Warfare Technician (big fancy name for a radar detector). My primary job was anti-ship missile defense and being an expert in adversarial threat and tactics. To this day I probably know more about our enemies capabilities than our own I was only concerned with what could hurt me!
I deployed five times and the last three were to the wonderful Persian Gulf. I was even deployed during the Y2K scare and was underway and on watch when the clocks rolled over to the new millennium and luckily absolutely nothing happened. Speaking of nothing happening, I never saw any action during my entire time in the Navy and I consider that to be a good thing.
