Robert (Bob)'s Story

Life After I left A-F High in 1961, I went to college at Plateville first in Industrial Art with a math minor graduateing in 1965. In July 1966 I was drafted and rode the army buss to the Milwaukee Induction Center with Don Alexander where we were swarn in. The following day they discharged both of us for medical reasons, bought us a steak and took us back to Friendship. I married Dorothy Allen on June 5, 1965 and countinued at Platteville in Civil Engineering graduating in 1968. Dorothy and I have three children and four grand children. Jillene is a Civil Engineer with WISDOT in Madison, Cheryl sells steel for a company in Horicon and Harold (Hal) is a Mechanical Engineer for Dessert Air located in Greenfield. Dorothy came down with breast cancer in March of 1990 and fought it four 14 years passing away on September 15, 2004. Dorothy stayed home and raise our children, after which she became an optician and worked for local eye doctors until she was not able to do it any longer because of the cancer. She insisted on going on vacation in September of 2004 and her doctor did not see a problem with it. We went to Lake Taho with friends which is where her liver gave out and I had to bring her home on a private medical flight where she was able to see her family. Dorothy was a great mother, a loving wife and a great companion who I miss greatly. After graduating from College I went to work for Fruin Colon Construction of St. Louis on the Charmin plants in Green Bay rebuilding paper machines and building new buildings. After a few years when our work was winding down they asked if I would like to go to Quate to do work on the oil fields. I was game but Dorothy with our children was not to kean on the idea. Therefore, I went to work for WISDOT in Green Bay designing highways like 172...Expand for more
over the Fox River by the reformatory, I-43 from Green Bay to Milwaukee, 21 from Omro to Oshkosh, and 23 from Sheboygan to Fond du Lac. In 1975 a bridge design consultant out of Madison met with me about four times and I finally agreed to work for him. We moved to Madison for about three years when I realized he was not going to share in the profits as he had promissed. I looked for a job and found that the Dodge County Highway Department needed an engineer to design highways and be in charge of their construction crew with three motor scrappers and three dozers which I accepted. I worked as their engineer for about 20 years and then took over as Highway Commissioner for 8 years until I retired on April 8, 2006. I still enjoy going back to the farm along HWY 21, going deer hunting and fishing with the grand kids. Who knows maybe I'll find a third woman who will put up with me some day. Don Alexander & I have two patents together for an asphalt plant to heat asphalt pavement from 100% virgin mix to 100% recycled mix (RAP). Our Patent Attorney in Madison put us in for patent of the year but we were beat out by Boise Speakers. CMI Corporation of Oklahoma City built a soil disorber under our patent which worked perfectly and we are currently working to sell the prototype we built to a Construction Company in Riverside California. At least it gives me something to do in retirement. In August 2006 I went to St Mary's in Madison and had two stents put in my right corinary artery which was only 98% block. If I had waited a little longer I would have been 4 years youger than my dad when he pass from a heart attack. Currently though I am doing fine walking on the tread mill in cardiac rehb at 8% grade and 4 MPH for 30 minutes which is better than what I could do before the proceedure.
