Robert's Story

Life After graduating from Oberlin College in 1968, I spent three years in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, teaching math in high school. Upon my return to Cleveland , Kay Jacoby '65 and I married, and then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she worked as a nurse and I graduated from Golden Gate University School of Law in 1976. Our marriage did not survive law school. I worked for a year in San Francisco, primarily on the 6th Circuit appeal in the Kent State Shootings civil case, before moving to West Virginia in 1977 and starting my career in legal services, eventually becoming the director of the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund, an LSC funded program. I finished my career with Legal Aid of West Virginia, the statewide program created by the merger of the four LSC funded programs in West Virginia in 2002. My Spouse Ruth and I met in Beckley, West Virginia, at a gathering of friends, some 35 years ago. She is a 1967 graduate of Grinnell College who came to West Virginia with the Appalachian Volunteers, and then VISTA after college. She worked in the Raleigh County Schools as an elementary school counselor.. My Kids My son Kevin graduated Wesleyan University in Middletown, CN, in 2004; and iAmerican U. School of Law in Washington, DC in 2008. He worked on the Hill for a year between college and law school. After law school, he clerked for Federal District Court Judge Joseph R. Goodwin in Chaleston, WV, for a year, b...Expand for more
efore opening his own practice with his wife, Sarah Brown. After two years, he took a counsel job with the WV Senate Judiciary Committee. Kevin and Sarah have a son born June 24, 2013. Jacob is the program director for Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa; and previously was the director for Garth Newel, a classical (with some blues and jazz) chamber music center in Warm Springs, VA. He is married to a woman from Alliance, OH, and they have two girls, 10 and 12. Jessica is doing some teaching in Guatemala and is married to an attorney from Guatemala in private practice, formerly with the Archbishop's Human Rights Office. They have two girls, ages nearly 4 and 10. They lived for a year in South Bend, IN, while Mario got an LLM in international human rights law. My Job I retired from Legal Aid of West Virginia in 2010; and spent about three years a Chair of the West Virginia Supreme Court's Access To Justice Commission. I have focused on traveling, with trips since retirement to New Zealand , Peru and Ecuador (Galapagos Islands), and France, a swell as several visits to Guatemala and trips around the US and Canada. The latter include several visits to the San Francisco Bay Area, and my brother Fred '66, and to Glacier National Park and the Canadian Rockies, the Canadian Maritimes and New England, and Las Vegas, Bryce, Zion and the Grand Canyon. I do a little work investigating for the West Virginia State Ethics Commission.
