Robert's Story
Life - December 2011
Now in Kuala Lumpur since July of this year. New job, new country, new city, better weather and almost no pollution. Alessandro is in bilingual school and he has taught himself to swim. Much less exotic life here as it is like being in Montreal but warmer. Should be back in Montreal towards the end of August next year, hope to see the old gang again, it was fun last time after so many years.
Life - March 2010
Shoot!!! I forgot how cold winter was!! but now, I hate the cold even more. After living in the heat for the past 16 years, I got a doze of reality when we got a snow storm in October that left 6 inches of the white stuff. You do get used to it but I still prefer the heat. Life here in Beijing is excellent. Phenomenal food, cheap living, 1 world, much like a new Montreal. Traveling a lot to Japan, Korea and within China. Trying some new foods (sand worms, live octopus, sea cucumber, bullfrog, grilled blowfish, all kinds of tofu, weird vegetables but all is very good. Heading to Shanghai next week to go sight seeing. Already played at Mission Hills Country Club (12 courses), it is fantastic so I am taking a week off in September to play with my buddies from Indonesia. Heading to the Philippines in October and probably doing a camper trailer tour of New Zealand around xmas. I started playing ice hockey again after 25 years, ......outch! but fun. 2010 is the year of the tiger, prosperity!!!!
Life - Sept 2009
Well, that was short lived!!!!
I am now in Beijing as of the 15th in a new job. The city is highly polluted and there is virtually nobody who speaks english. This is surprising after the 2008 olympics. Even in restaurants in business centers, they don't even know 5 words. I guess I will be learning Mandarin. I have found hockey, slowpitch, tennis and golf groups so I will be able to do some sports. Now we are on the hunt for a house, a maid and a driver. Will write more when we are settled.
Life - Feb 2009
Life is much better, I am living in Jakarta, Indonesia. The weather is great (no snow!!!) and the golf is pretty good, the only real problem here is the pollution a...Expand for more
nd the traffic. What can you expect from a city with a population of about 22 million people.
I am trying to get back to Colombia, my second home. It really doesn't matter much as long as I am safe and away from the sand dunes of the middle east. I will be coming home in May (12th) for about 1 month so it would be nice to get together with some of you and catch up with old times.
Just got together with a buddy from University yesterday, David Tan. I had not seen him in 27 years. He lives in Borneo and works in a small pulp and paper mill. It is amazing how people change, he has two kids and is doing well.
I just got a note from Christiane Hemond, she just got in touch with Marie Maheu whom she had not seen for years, I have Michel Charbonneau's email address for those who may want to get in touch. It would be great to have a reunion at one point in time. I am normally on the other side of the world and need a fair amount of notice but it would be great to see all of you again.
Life - June 2008
Life is not great now because of where I live (Saudi Arabia) but it looks like I am heading to Asia in September for a couple of years. Qualifying for retirement in 6 months and contemplating other avenues where I can run my businesses, travel and play golf.
Just had a son in September but he lived in Angola for 5 months before I could be with him permanently. Life is full of surprises and challenges, the key is to manage them so you can have balance and be happy (I'm still working on that) so you never know. Trying to get to see 100 countries (did 63). Trying to experience the culture of each place and grow from it. There is so much to see out there, it is hard to settle down somewhere although one gets tired of moving every two years.
The final resting place will be somewhere where there is no snow, where you can access to a beach and have mountains. Rio, Bogota, Cape Town, Phuket and St-Barts are among the favorites but I am not discounting places like, seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius, Turks & Caicos, the Bahamas, the Grenadines, Vietnam, Perth either. Tough to make a decision with so many places to see.
