Robert's Story
Life
After graduating from Cranford High in 1978, I went to Rutgers and graduated with a BA in political science. First I lived in Japan for a year teaching English. I then worked for a few years and was planning on going to law school and continue on a political career. My view on law changed however and I went back to Rutgers full time and got my MBA in 1987.
After my MBA, I moved to Montclair and eventually bought a house in Upper Montclair and lived there until 1999. During this time, I had a great group of friends in Montclair who were very close and very social.
I worked as a Division Director of Finance for a very large engineering company headquartered in NY from 1987-1999. I worked mostly in the NJ office. I was at the World Trade Center on the 93rd floor during the first bombing. I was trapped up in the building for about 5 hours before I got down. I was never really scared and never really believed anything else could happen. Boy, was I wrong.
My real passion during this time, and to this day, is skiing. My friends and I used to rent a house near Killington about 7 or 8 times a year. During one of these trips I met my future wife, Aine (pronounced onya) apres ski.
Aine lived in Boston at the time and we did a long distance dating deal starting in 1995. She moved to Upper Montclair in 1997 and we got married in 1998. Aine is from Dublin and so we got married in Ireland.
We moved to San Clemente, Califorinia in 1999 after I was recruited out here by a good friend that I used to work wit...Expand for more
h in NY. San Clemente is a great beach town located about 20 minutes south of Laguna Beach in Orange County, CA. We have a cute beach house that is about a 5 minute walk to the beach and two of the best surf spots in OC.
I received a used surfboard for my birthday last year and my resolution this year is to make a concentrated effort to learn to surf. I have tried before with some success but never kept up with it.
We have two boys. Zachary is 7 and Killian is 4. Zachary was diagnosed with autism when he was about 2 1/2. A lot of our time and effort revolves around helping Zachary. He has a busy time with 40 hours of therapy a week plus other programs. He did not speak at all until about 4 but is adding more and more language. It is very tough deal but we love him very much.
Killian is quite a character and is very entertaining. He goes to pre-school 5 days a week and is very social. He just finished his first T Ball season and is now starting soccer.
We love living in So. Cal, but I do miss the people of NJ and the NE. People out here are not as upfront.
Outside of work, I volunteer for Autism Speaks and am the co-chair of the San Diego Walk. I work with raising corporate donations, organizing volunteers, etc.
As with most of you, the weekends are full of spending time with the kids. We are about 20 minutes from Legoland and are annual members so we go down there quite a bit.
I am still interested in politics and hope to get back into this at some point in the future when the time is right.
