Robert's Story
I was born Robert Clayton Duke, Jr on January 11, 1956 in Houston, Tx. As a child my family often moved around the country, and I lived in California, Texas, Kentucky, New York, Connecticut, Kansas and Illinois, with brief stays in Arizona and Baja California, MX. Through out these travels I attended 18 schools, with my last school being Westminster High in 1972.
At Westminster, I was pretty much a loner, I had a few friends from the neighborhood, and a few from the AG classes, but I was not a social butterfly. I did have a few girls I was interested in, but most were only friendships, nothing serious.
I tried out for the water polo team, but found that my swimming strength was not a strong as I needed to be. I loved history classes, for the most part did well in everything but Physical Education. I hated PE, and skipped almost my entire junior year, and the half year of senior classes.
Once I found the Agriculture programs and the FFA, I found my niche. I had a green thumb, so this was my future. I was elected in both years as a FFA Chapter officer, and completed both my Greenhand and Chapter Farmer qualifications before leaving school in December 1973. One of my first projects was the school Rose Garden. Westminster being the sister city to Westminster, UK, and the city having a formal Rose Garden, Charlie Ramos, our Ag/FFA advisor and the FFA members, decided to have a competition for a design for a Rose Garden at the enterance to the school farm. My design was chosen for the project, and I lead the class in construction and planting of the Rose Garden. I was responsible for the daily maintenance for the 1 and 1/2 that I was in the program. Knowing I wasn't going to have enough credit to graduate in June, I left school in December 1973. 10 years later I recieved my GED.
This is were I met Beckey Cross. Another FFA student, we stated seeing one another, and got married in August 1974.
By summer of my junior year, I had worked in a commercial greenhouse for some months, but before the end of summer the place was raided by Westminster PD and closed down for growing marijuana. I then started working at Ward and Harrington Lumber Company, in their retail garden center. I learned so much more, and met many of the commercial growers in the area. I was there until April 1975 when I joined the US Coast Guard.
The US Coast Guard was only intented to be a chance to get some life experience, get my GED and school benefits. After boot camp I was sent to a search and rescue (SAR) station in Freeport TX, south of Houston. Within a short time I found my calling, I was a damn good radio operator, could run a teletype, and could keep track of information very well. After a 3 day dredge fire, I applied for USCG Radioman A school. So, August 1977 , a very pregnant Beckey and I loaded up our car and drove to Vallejo, CA where Beckey would spend the next few months, until the baby was born, and I went on across the bay to the USCG Training Center outside of Petaluma, CA.
Our daughter Jana was born in mid October, and we set up an apartment in Petaluma.
I had a rough time a school, I held a 95 average on course material, but had difficulties getting up to speed in typing and learning Morse code. But at the final hour, I graduated with my class, as an E-3/Seaman Radioman.
Our next stop was at Station Channel Islands Harbor, in the city of Oxnard, CA. I served in a couple different roles while there. Beside being a qualified radio watchstander, I also worked in the station office as the unit storekeeper, assistant housing officer, and qualified Petty Officer of the Day. During off duty time, Beckey and I ran a newspaper route delivering papers to stores and vending machines in the Oxnard area. In June 1979 our son Jene was born.
In May 1981, orders came for Texas. We were off to Galveston, TX and the USCGC VALIANT (WMEC 621), a 210ft medium endurance cutter. Our missions were mostly 30 day drug enforcement patrols in the Southern Gulf of Mexico, Yucatan Straits and Northwestern Caribbean Sea.
Sadly, things started coming apart in our marriage, after Christmas 1983, I had moved out, to my own apartment in Galveston, and Beckey had moved to her own apartment. I would get over to see the kids when I could.
Little did I know that things in my life would change so quickly. Not long after moving to my apartment, I was introduced to a woman that would change my live forever. At the time, neither of knew that within a year's time we would be in a relationship that would eventually last for almost 40 years.
I was a 2nd class Radioman and, Jim Owens was a 2nd class Hospital Corpsman aboard the ship. This Sunday, January 22, we had duty. I had stopped by to pickup Jim to take him to the ship. I was sitting in their living room drinking a cup of coffee, and talking with Ruth in the Kitchen, while Jim finished getting ready.
A knock came at the door, Ruth hollered come in.... The door opened... and in stepped a neighbor. She was dressed in a white negligee, heels and a full length silver fox coat. Her dark black hair was done up beautifully and perfect makeup. Ruth introduced her as Rene from across the hall. Rene explained that she was fixing breakfast for friends she'd been out with the night before for her birthday and needed some sugar. We exchanged greeting, chatted for a minute, and she left to return to the continuing birthday party across the hall.
After the door closed, Ruth and I talked a little more, I found out that Rene was the property manager of the apartment complex. I looked at Ruth, and said in the most serious tone "I'm going to marry that woman." Ruth looked at me and laughed "Are you out of you mind?".
I saw Rene in passing a couple times over the next months. One evening Ruth and Jim were having a get together with a few friends at their new apartment. That night I decide to bring my guitar along, and was sitting there playing when Rene walked in. While I played Rene and I started talking. And when the party broke up around midnight, Rene and I went for a long walk on the beach. She told me that she was in the middle of a divorce and had just broken up with her boyfriend. We went back to her apartment and we soon fell into bed, as we both had to get up for work in a few hours.
We started spending more time together, and she took me to meet her mother and dad. One week I spent helping her and her adopted sister, Cindy with a wedding brunch for 200 in San Antonio. By May I had orders to Group San Diego, and asked her if she wanted to go with me. She said yes, and we packed our belongings in June and off to the West Coast. And we had such a roller coaster relationship.
After leaving San Diego in June 1987, I went back to VALIANT as Radioman in Change. I befriended her dad, who had just lost his wife, and we would hang out at his place and ran around together. Rene was still working in the apartment industries in Texas, and I would see her occasionally, and talk to her often. In 1988 she moved to Illinois to work with her brother-in-law near Chicago. I flew up a couple times, and spent some time with them. But I was also dating a OTR truck driver. Well, my trucker Margret, Rene and her sister Cindy all became good friends. That went on for a while, and it worked out well.
In September 1989, Rene was severely injured in a car accident in Woodstock, Il.. Disoriented on a wet, foggy road, one that she had traveled many times, she crashed through a T- intersection, breaking her leg in four places and crushing her lumbar spine. I was in Mayport Fl going to Navy school, and woke with a feeling of sometime wrong. My first break, I called the house in Woodstock, and the neighbor told me that Rene had been in an accident and was in the hospital.
The next few months were difficult, I talked with her in the hospital as often as I could. While at sea, I wrote daily, and mailed little cards to help cheer her up when mail went ashore. Although the doctors said she would probably never walk again. By Thanksgiving she had walked out of the hospital.
Christmas, New years, and birthdays came and went. On Valentines day, I sent her a card asking her to marry me, for the last time. If knew if she was not ready, then I would move on, but always remain her friend. I got a card back a short time later, saying " Is this my first last chance, or my last first chance, YES!. Three days later I was on a plane from Houston to Chicago. We talked late into the morning. And soon we were looking at wedding rings and a dress. Within a few days of returning back to Texas I met up with her dad, and told him I was going to marry his daughter, his reply "It's about damn time, son"
We married June 23, 1990 in a ceremony at her sister Cindy's house in Woodstock, IL. And began our life together as Robert and Rene, travelling across country to our new duty station in Long Beach, CA.
In California, I was assigned to the Eleventh Coast Guard District - Telecommunications staff, problems with my clearance kept me out of the commcen, but ended up as the assistant to CWO Charlie Colburn (dttm1). Learned a lot under him, and within a year I was asked to assume the role of the district office staff computer system manager, and then Regional Systems Manager for entire district. I loved it there, my clearance problem resolved itself, and I was able to do something that would further my post CG career.
While I was doing my CG thing, Rene, while battling a collapsed bone fusion in her spine, multiple surgeries, and a myriad of Cts, MRI, and other tests, completed a certification as a Nail technician, not only the top of her class, but aced the State Board fo...Expand for more
r her license (I was her model for state board practicals). She was just one of a few people that had done that.
A year later she went to a new course for Pharmacy Technicians at a local college. This was a new course which later would become a standard course for all Pharmacy Techinians in the future. At the age of 33 Rene graduated as the Student of the Year in the Pharmacy Technician class, Student of the Year in all Health Occupations Classes, and Student of the Year of all classes in the North Orange County Regional Occupational Programs and Career Education Foundation. She was also selected as the first winner of the HAL CAMP AWARD for Most inspirational Student of 1992.
After completing her class work, she was hired by Childrens Hospital of Orange County working in a pediatric pharmacy. She was often seen accompanying the hospital Mascot "CHOCO Bear" around the wards, and even had a stint in the costume herself. In her off time, she was involved with several special education programs, and the California Society of Hospital Pharmacists helping to implement a program to provide a state certification for Pharmacy Technicians, which ultimately went nationwide.
In 1993, knowing that I'd be getting orders soon for my twilight tour, we looked in to buying a home in Texas with my mom and dad. We flew out to San Antonio during the spring and found a house on 5 acres. Within a couple months we finalized on it, and commenced the move. So good bye to California and moved home. She came ahead with our kids, Jene and Angela, so they could start the new school year. I stayed in Long Beach until my orders to MSO Corpus Christi came through in May 94.
In Texas, Rene volunteered to be an assistant teacher in the Special Education program at Canyon High School. Soon, she was also involved with the Cheerleading squads as an assistant to the Cheer Coach. She loved the girls in the squads, and was thrilled to go with them as they went on to the National Cheerleading Championships in Florida that year, ranking as the eleventh best team in the country. She volunteered with "Communities in School" a program working with at-risk students, while continuing with the her work with cheerleadng program.
Once I reported to MSO, I would spend the week in Corpus and drive home for the weekend, in time for Friday night high school football. It worked pretty well, Corpus was a good place for me to wind out my career. I put my papers in and retired on Feb 1, 1996.
I laid off a few months, but by April I was ready to get back to work. Besides we had a house to pay for, and retirement didn't quite cover it. I started working with a temp company moving computers at USAA insurance company. Everything was going good, and I was in line to be hired by USAA directly, but that wasn't in the cards. While having lunch with Rene's grandmother, I started having some pain in my left shoulder, got so bad that I had Rene take me over to the hospital thinking only a sprained shoulder from moving computers. Turns out that I had a heart blockage, and end up with angioplasty and a stent. I was back to work a week later.
Within the year, I would have triple bypass surgery, and my dad passed away. Rene retired from teaching to take care of me, and her own health problems started to rear up. During the next few years, she served as a guardian for a young lady with special needs, while working to get her own daughter through similar programs. However she finally transfered the guardianship to a family member. And retired from public life.
In 2000, we made a trip to Las Vegas to renew our vows on our 10th anniversary. It was also a trip to see her dad and stepmother.... We had a campy little ceremony at the "Famous Little White Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas Strip" it was so much fun.
We made one more trip to Vegas, just a year later. Rene's dad had develop luekemia, and passed away just a few days after we arrived. She was holding his hand when he passed.
The accident injuries, the attempts to repair her spine, lead to spinal nerve damage. For many years she had a pain management pump, filled with heavy duty pain killers including Fentnyl. Her pain doctor tried many different things but most only made the pain almost tolerable.
As for me, I worked at a few different jobs, Sheriff's dispatcher, Ambulance dispatcher, Maintenance man, Lead Voice/Data cabling technician, then my last job as a Fire Alarm/Security technician, which lead me to Service Manager, Purchasing Agent and Warehouse Manager for a local company. I was with them for 10 years, and was let go in 2012 due to downsizing, seems I worked myself out of a job.. by showing them how to run purchasing for 5 national offices from 1 central location. If I could do 5, my replacement could do 6 just as easy. S I became a fuller time husband and grandfather.
The kids grew up and moved in and out many times... seems we always had a houseful of family.
My oldest, Jana married a considerably older gentleman and had a daughter in 2001, Whitney is a lovely young lady who lives with her father in North Carolina. They divorced. In 2009, Jana brought her 3 month old son Dawson, to live with us. And it has been an absolute blast. He is an incredibly smart young man, and we just loved having him with us. Jana went to school to be a nail technician, and worked in the industry for a few years, but soon found out that she had a reaction to the new products being used in the local salons. Jana and Dawson lived with us until mid 2020, when she and her mother (my ex) bought a mobile home here in town. I am thankful that Jana was there, she helped my some much with Rene, and they were good for each other.
Rene's daughter Angela got married, and divorced her husband after he tried to a hire a hit man to kill her. Sadly he had talked to an undercover police office, and ended up in state prison for 5 years.
My son, Jene married 3 time and divorced twice. His third wife, Korrin is wonderful, and Jene has helped her finishing raising her beautiful daughter Alyeiah. She graduated last year and is working 2 jobs and going to nursing school.
Rene's health started failing. In 2019 she went through a full drug withdrawal before we discovered that her 5th pump had failed a month earlier. The pump was replaced a few days later on a Friday. We had anticipited the possibly that she might have problems, and was ready with narcan, and the doctor's number was on my phone. 6 hours after restarting the pump she was in full overdose, 4mg of narcan didn't bring her out of it. I called her doctor, and he arrived 10mins before the paramedics got there, and was already treating her.... rough weekend in the ICU at the local hospital, but by Sunday she ready to go home.
This was just the beginning, her pain doctor of 25 years retired, and one of his colleagues took her on. The new pain doctor was a younger woman, who really didn't impress Rene the first few time we meet with her. But like any medical proffessional, we were finally able to get through this, and became good friends.
But another pump failed and we decided enough with the equipment that really wasn't working anymore. Sadly this was the beginning of the end. This was followed by a prolapse bladder, which found a vernial hernia in her abdomen, that postponed the bladder repair – then 5 months to get a surgeon for the hernia repair and the bladder surgeon in the same room at the same time. She had the procedure on the Nov 16th 2021. By Thanksgiving she was not feeling good, and didn't want to get out of bed. On the following monday, we took her to the emergency room at the surgical hospital. She was having fever and difficulty breathing, and she was admitted. Tuesday she decided that she couldn't stand the keeping the O2 mask on and asked to be intibated. I knew at that point the she would not come out of the hospital. I was at the hospital every day those final days, going home at midnight, and getting up early to get back to the hospital. Friday night as I left the doctor said she was starting to show some improvement. Saturday morning I was a little late getting there and she was not doing good. Her temp had spiked to 106 overnight... within a hour she coded for the first time... I called everyone to get there now!... but she had coded a second time while I was out of the room. Everyone arrived... but by that time the cardiologist had been in, and told me that shocking her a third time would damage her heart beyond repair. Knowing that Rene wouldn't want to be on a ventilator for the rest of her life. I signed the DNR, before the ink was dry, she coded for the final time. Everyone was there in the room when she went. She died from a post op infection.
After all the craziness of the 80's, we truly loved one another. She loved being a mother to Angela, Jene and Jana, mother in law to Korrin, grandmother to Dawson, Alyeiah, and Whitney, a big sister to Lance and Terry, and friends to so many people young or old. And was proud to be my best friend and soul mate.
God took Rene to heaven on December 4th 2021. She was reunited with her mother and father, and many family and friends that gone on before her. She was cremated and she is with me here. Our desire is to have our ashes put together and be placed in a fishing reef off the seawall near the place we met in Galveston.
It has been a year now since Rene passed away. I am thankful for the near 40 years as friends, and 30+ years as wife and husband. I now live in an 18ft travel trailer in a local RV park in Schertz TX. Our home was leveld in Sep 2022 by the owners. I hope to be on the road traveling to see family and old friends very soon.
