Robert's Story
Life
Well right after Hoover I went directly into the US Navy. I spent four years there as a trained weatherman. I did mostly observing, though I spent four months at NAS Moffett Field working in anti-submarine warfare. The years in the Navy were great. After the Navy I settled in the San Francisco bay area living first in Piedmont, and then progressively farther south as the years went on.
Right after my naval service, I began attending junior college in Alameda and went to work for Safeway Food Stores in Oakland, Rockridge area. After 3 years at Alameda JC I earned an AS in Mathematics. During those years in the JC I met my first wife, we married in 1989. The marriage lasted 6 years and we had one child who lives with me and attends high school in the mountains above Fresno where we now live.
After Alameda JC I was accepted to UC Berkeley in 1991 where I lasted 1 1/2 semesters, then withdrew. I was really disappointed with the professors. They were inaccessible and the Student assistants were mostly worthless. The only redeeming quality of the experience was that I took classes with friends from the JC who also majored in math.
I...Expand for more
took a job with NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) at Oakland International airport as an upper air observer. I launched weather balloons for the next 11 years. Pay was great, the work hours tiresome. Balloons go up 4 am and 4 pm every day the gear was working.
In 1995 I returned to school attending classes at CSU Hayward eventually earning a degree in 1998 in applied mathematics with a minor in computer science. Better late than never I say. I began to substitute teach in Union City and after 1 1/2 years they asked me to teach full time. So began my new career.
I left the bay area in 2001 moving to the mountains above Fresno. I teach in a local high school mostly math (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II), though I was the webmaster for a year before NCLB left me behind and my background in math pigeon holed me into all math all day!:( I found a way out last year 06-07, by authoring a new course, Video Game Design, and getting it through all the committees and the school board. So I will have at least one CS class next year along with a lot of Algebra II.
Well thatÂs all for now. Thanks for taking the time.
