Robert's Story
Shortly after graduation, I moved with the family down to Memphis, TN, where my dad had gotten a job with the University of Memphis. Graduating with a degree in film production in 1986, I married my college sweetheart Nancy in '87, and we now have four kids --I know, it stuns me too. With one boy and three girls, our eldest daughter is now attending college in the area (Eastern TN State University).
After college I bopped around Careerland for a while, even working as a carpenter for a couple of years, before I became the editor of a magazine published by the National Muscle Car Association (NMCA). A division of Competition Cams, an automotive performance company based in Memphis, we had eight great years before the NMCA was sold to Hot Rod Magazine. Opting out of moving to expensive Southern CA, I took a job with a TV production company at the other end of TN near Bristol (home of the famous NASCAR track), and have since been writing and producing shows for ESPN, Outdoor Channel, Oxygen and now Fox Sports Net (FSN). Some of the series I have produced include "Super Chevy Show", "Mothers Car Show Series", "Bidding Wars", "Motor Mania", "In the Drivers Seat", "World of Trucks", the "Lokar Car Show Series", the "USAR Pro Cup Series" (formally known as the Hooter's Cup), and now "Motorhead Garage," which reunites Dave Bowman and Sam Memmolo from the now classic "Shadetree Mechanic."
For those traveling through the Mountain South, I've also written articles for Marquee, a regional lifestyle publication, an...Expand for more
d have contributed stories to CompetitionPlus.com, an online drag racing magazine. Those who knew me back in high school are probably as surprised as I am that I would turn into such a gearhead!
This transformation started because of my wife, Nancy, and really took hold after we bought a beat-up 1967 Mustang coupe to restore. Over 20 years later we've still got the 'Stang, although after getting it nearly perfect, it's now in dire need of another restoration due to a lack of undercoating and a broken oil pump. (note: the motor has since been rebuilt and the car is running great with my son Scott now at the wheel).
During the summer I travel a lot, but surprisingly, I rarely if ever get to return to Michigan. Despite some relatives still living in the Flint area, the obligations of my immediate family and work scheduling has prevented me from making the trip, although I really need to. I don't actually miss Michigan that much anymore; here in the mountain South we have mild winters with just enough snow to keep the kids happy, while summers are nowhere near as brutal as they were in Memphis.
If I ever get back up there, though, I'm sure some of the old memories will come flooding back.
After changing careers and becoming a Methodist minister, my dad is now retired along with my mom in North Carolina. My sister Ann is also a Methodist minister, married to yet another Methodist minister, raising three kids in Northern Mississippi. We're really spread out and only get to see each other during the holidays.
