Robert's Story

Life I was born in San Francisco and spent my first two years in Oakland. Then in 1951 my parents moved to Via Lucas in San Lorenzo. I started at David E. Martin in 1954, moved on to seventh grade at Barrett Junior High in 1961. During that time I played Little League on the U.A.W. Local 333 and Westinghouse teams. At Barrett, Mrs. Hall was my Core teacher for 7th grade and Mr. Caswell for 8th. I started at Arroyo in fall 1963. The Beach Boys were singing "Surfing USA." In high school I became less interested in baseball & more & more interested in girls, cars & rock & roll. No surprise there. I went out for X-country my frosh & soph years and for swimming my junior & senior years. Teachers I particularly recall were Senorita Powell for Spanish, Messrs. Tandowsky & Bachus for English, Mr. Vanos for Biology, Mrs. K for Typing, Mrs. Koundakjian (sp?) for Social Studies, Ms. Bissell for U.S. History and Mr. ?? for History (my memory's a bit fuzzy on some of these - I'll make corrections and add to it later). Some of the coaches were Oden, Ryan, Thornock & Gastineau. Ryan was the X-country coach. Who was our swimming coach? Ryan, I believe. I recall going to see "The Crucible" in San Francisco with our Senior (or was it Junior?) English class. I graduated in June 1967 and started college in the fall. Then from 1968 to 1970 I served a mission for my church in Guatemala & El Salvador. Fascinating experience. I returned to college in 1971, transferred to BYU in 1972 and graduated in poly sci. in 1974. Along the way I met Linda Nielsen of Portland, OR and we got marrie...Expand for more
d in summer of 1973. I started law school at Pepperdine Sch. of Law which, then, had their campus in Anaheim, Orange County. We've been in Orange County ever since and have lived in Fullerton since 1979. I graduated from law school in 1977 and started practicing late that year. I've now been in practice for 25+ years. I joined Booth, Mitchel, Strange & Smith (later Booth, Mitchel & Strange LLP) in fall 1981 and have been with them since then. Linda & I have four kids, Becky (1974, married, with 4 kids); Ryan (1976, married, with 4 kids, starting in engineering in Las Vegas); Erik (1979, married, working in IT, first child on the way); and Jared (1985, sophomore in college & a good kid to have around). At present we have eight grandkids. Over the years I had a fairly steady interest in photography, mountains, deserts, rock climbing, swimming, gardening in the back yard, and staying in touch with family & friends. At church for 13 years I was the adult advisor to teenaged boys 16 to 19. Looking back, it was great fun -- & beneficial: while taking those kids on trips to beach, desert or mountain, I also took my own boys and we had great experiences together. Over the past 20 years I've taken a number of classes at Fullerton College & Cal State - Fullerton, mostly in anthropology & ethnic studies. They've been very enjoyable. All my kids have inherited my wife's musical talent and have picked up guitar on their own. So to stay up, I'm taking a guitar class at the college. I'm looking forward to renewing my acquaintance with y'all. Rob Briggs Fullerton, CA
