Robert's Story
Life
I was born and raised in Abilene, Texas until my sophomore year of high school. I lived in Ozona during my sophomore year, '74-'75, then moved to Abilene, where I attended Cooper High School. After graduation in '77, I moved back to Ozona for several years. In 1983, I joined the Army. I have been stationed overseas 3 times; 6 years in Germany, 2 years in Panama. I spent 10 years as a paratrooper with the 82d Airborne Division, with whom I am a veteran of Desert Storm, and I retired in June 2003. I worked as a Force Protection Officer in Kuwait for a year and a half. I lived in Iraq for two years where I worked for L3 Vertex Aerospace. I currently live and work in Afghanistan, where I have been for 3 years. I also have a home in Abilene, where my gorgeous wife waits patiently for me to come home. I have 5 adult "children" and 4 grandchildren.
Military
I attended OSUT (One Station Unit Training) at Ft. Benning, Georgia in May through August 1983, to become an 11HE9 (Heavy Anti-Tank Weapon Crewmember). My first duty assignment was 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry in Bamberg, Germany, from 1983 to 1986. I attended Airborne School at Ft. Benning in 1986 enroute to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, where I was assigned to 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute infantry Regiment, which soon became Delta Company, 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Notable deployments with them included training in Honduras, where I attained my Honduran Parachutist Badge. I spent approximately one year with them prior to attending the 67T (Utility Helicopter Repairer) Course at Ft. Eustis, Virginia. Upon completion, I was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 82nd Aviation Regiment, between 1988 until 1991. During that assignment, I dep...Expand for more
loyed to Operation Desert Storm as a Blackhawk crewchief. I was selected to be the 18th Airborne Commander's Crewchief for a portion of my deployment. Upon my return from Desert Storm, I attended the Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course at Ft. Eustis, Virginia. My next assignment took me to Ft. Kobbe, Panama, to the 1st Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment. I was there from September 1991 to September 1993. I returned to 2nd Battalion, 82nd Aviation at Ft. Bragg, where I remained until 1998. I attended the 91A (Bio-Medical Equipment Repairer) Course at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Aurora, Colorado, graduating in 1999. I transferred to the 226th Medical Logistics Battalion in Pirmasens, Germany, and the unit moving on to Miesau, Germany during my deployment. During that time, we had just deployed to the field in Baumholder, Germany on 11 September 1991. The following day, we redeployed to Miesau and my "career" in Force Protection began. I trained a large portion of the guard force that was responsible for protecting Miesau, as well as other assets. I also was one of the Sergeants of the Guard during the remainder of my time there. I left Germany for an assignment at the US Army Medical Research Institute for Chemical Defense (USAMRICD) at the Edgewood Arsenal of Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. I was the Non-commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC)of the Medical Maintenance Section. I retired from the Army on June 1st, 2003, after 20 years, 27 days, and relocated with my family back to Abilene, Texas. In January 2004, I went to Kuwait as a contractor, then went to work in Iraq in June 2006, then, after two years, went to Afghanistan and continue to do contract work in Afghanistan, but that's another story.
