Robert's Story
Life
My wife, Johnice, and I retired from the Galveston Police Department in the fall of 2000. I have been a full time faculty member at Galveston College until this spring(2003)
when we decided to move back to Texarkana, closer to our grandkids. We are both planning on working, at least part time or opening an antique or catering business. We bought a house at 3201 Pine and am looking forward to the next hundred years or so.
As of this date, May 23, 2005 my wife and I have taken up residence in Texrkana, Texas. I am hoping to get a teaching position somewhere and Johnice is also wanting to go back to work. Retirement is OK but not just quite yet. We live at 3201 Pine and our phone number is (903) 792-1888.
As of this date I have been offered and have accepted a position with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Parole Division. The office is only 4/10 of a mile from our house, how great is that. So far I'm enjoying it.
School
I was not very happy as a high school student, I was very immature and not aggressive enough. That changed once I joined the military and became a professional peace officer. I guess most of us grow up some after high school.
College
After graduating from Texarkana Jr. College myself and a friend went to the University of Texas where we worked as police officers and went to college parttime. I graduated with a GPA of 3.4 in my Bachelor's and 3.6 in my Masters. I really enjoye...Expand for more
d college although I didn't fit in all that well since it was the age of the hippie movement and I was a practicing peace officer going to school parttime. I did use my degree to teach a Galveston College since 1975 and as a full time faculty member since 2000.
Workplace
I began my career working for the Arlington, Texas police department in 1970 after I was discharged from the military. I was there about three years and then went to the Dallas Sheriff's Office while finishing my Master's. In 1975 I was offered a job as a police officer in Galveston, Texas. I worked as a patrolman both on the street and in the training academy. I made Sgt. in 1980 and worked as both a patol sgt. and training academy sgt. I was promoted to Lieutenant in 1985 and headed up the academy, public relations, and the criminal investigation division, not at the same time. I was in charge of police training for the department for a total of 12 years. When I retired I was the Day Watch Commander(Lt.) and had been since 1995. My wife and I were married before we came to Galveston and she retired as a Detective.
Military
I really enjoyed my time in the Air Force. I needed the discipline and regimentation it afforded. I also needed to learn how to take care of myself in a fight and if the military won't teach you anything else it will teach you that. It really helped me to mature and grow up and it was fun, for that I will be forever grateful.
