Robert's Story

Life As we parted ways I took off to Houston TX for school. I came back to Waco in late 1985. I met a nice young lady that had a 5 year old girl in 1996. We were married within 6 months. We sold the old historic house and moved to Orlando Florida in 1997 where we bore two crackers (native Floridians) while living there. I was transferred to South Carolina in 2004 and commuted between SC and Fl for 6 months. (1100 miles a weekend) until the company moved my family to Anderson SC (suburb of Greenville SC). My wife had picked out an old Georgian style mansion that had been abandoned for 2 years and neglected for 10. You talk about money pit!! I wore many different hats for a year. All the blood sweat and tears paid off when I got a job offer to go California in late 2005. The company bought our house and moved us to CA January 2006. So here I am living large in Southern CA. We are taking advantage of this time in our lives and exploring the western United States. There is so much to see and do. I hope all of you embrace the beauty of every day. You only get a shot at life once then it's gone. Workplace Much to your surprise I pursued a career in the automotive industry. I landed a job after technical school at Steve Colvin imports, in Waco, as a Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi technician where I learned to appreciate the a European automobile! I bounced in and out of different dealers for awhile until I moved to Chicago. In Chicago my first job was found via the yellow pages. That dealer closed two years after I arrived. The employees scattered across the Chicago-land area. While working at a small garage on the south side of Chicago. I was introduced to my next boss by one of my former colleagues. He was a Porsche technician and was on verge of opening his own European auto repair facility. Over the next two years I worked on continuing my education in the auto industry, taking night classes at local colleges and getting certified in the automotive field. I worked at s...Expand for more
everal jobs around south Chicago; and jobs out of my home until we opened the European business in 1993. We worked hard to establish a name for ourselves in south Chicago. Within a year the business was known around the entire Chicago-land area. The business grew fast and I learned a lot about business and people. I became manager in 1996 just before I moved to Florida. The move was somewhat abrupt, forcing me to choose the easiest employment. I was hired as a Porsche technician at a European repair / race shop in Orlando Florida. The owner was more worried about racing than running a business so I took over as manager in late 1997. Over the next few years I noticed that the auto industry was rapidly changing. To stay on top off things I needed to get back into the field which I knew only a manufacture could provide. I searched the papers for a year for “the perfect job”. I finally found an ad from Universal Technical Institute looking for BMW technical Instructors. The thought of being an Instructor had never crossed my mind. But what a neat way to learn the latest technology! After four months of interviews I was hired by UTI as a BMW STEP instructor in late 1999. The STEP program is an accelerated graduate program that is offered to “top of the class” trade school graduates seeking a career with BMW. The program is six months of very intense study and hands on training. After training the students from the STEP program for two years I moved into dealer technician training; I worked with the dealer technicians until 2004. At this time, I was transferred to South Carolina to conduct special training classes for the BMW assembly plant employees. It was a great experience. I learned a lot about curriculum development and systematic training. It was a milestone in my career. In the fall of 2005 BMW North America interviewed me for the position of Senior Technical Instructor. With the acceptance of this position my family and I where moved to southern California January 2006.
