Robert's Story

Hello Classmates, First of all, and always most important, I hope all is well with you and yours. Since most of my longtime friends like Carl Cabral and Joe Zinni would not come here to find out things about me this is written for others that I have lost contact with. After graduating, I worked in my trade (which introduce me to programming automated drill press) for a bit to save money and put myself through college. I attended Bridgewater State College and was one of the very lucky ones to graduate with a computer science degree back in the days when most people and businesses did not use computers, and PCs didn't even exist yet. I also had the great pleasure to play football there for 4 years as a 3-year starter. After graduation I started at a small (60 employees) medical software startup company in Boston called IDX. We became the number one company in nation at medical schools (in about 75% of them nationally and number 3 in clinical office software in the country). I was very privileged to work with many people that where focused, leading edge and extremely imaginative. We were bought by GE around 2004, but some of us old timers still remained. Recently (2018) we were bought by a private hedge fund and were merged with Athenahealth (also bought by fund). I was able to retire after we got the kids through college in 2022. I met my exceptional wife there in early IDX days, and we got married in 1991 at a beautiful ceremony at Mount Holyoke College. We have three totally different children. Matthew is the oldest. He graduated from BP also. He got to state in SkillUSA (old VICA) medaling at district in Computer Networking. He won best shop student for CNT (Computer Networking) and unsung hero for football there. He graduated in 2015 from UMASS Dartmouth in Computer Engineering and graduated a year later with his master's. He was selected to present his thesis paper 'Study of Authentication with IoT (Internet of things) Testbed' at the IEEE International Symposium on Technologies for Homeland Security (DHS/HST) conference nationally. He won best paper at this conference. He also was selected to receive the student service award for UMASS Dartmouth for 'Outstanding Service to the Department'. He is working at Fidelity investments in their network group in North Smithfield, RI. Matthew was a student ambassador with people to people and had trips to Australia, one to (England/Scotland/Ireland) then (Italy/Monaco/France) in his middle school years. Nathan, our second child graduated from BP in 2015. He was in Collision, and he then graduated in 2017 from New Engla...Expand for more
nd Tech in Automotive. He also got his additional certificate in high performance engines there also. He missed HS football (finished his three years with winning records for each year and being on 2 league championship teams. They finished 8-3 his senior year so did not miss going 3 for 3 by much). He started playing semi pro football in 2020. His first year they were not good, not winning a game, so was adjustment for him. He had done well at BP though he liked shop more than academics. Yet, he did just miss a perfect MCAS Biology score as science as is his strong subject. He is an extremely hard worker, as his second year in college he was full time student and full-time employee at Firestone. Nathan was also student ambassador in middle school, and he travelled to England, Normandy (his favorite) and France. Our daughter Emma graduated from Taunton high school graduating 11 in a class of 469. She was elected to the National Honor Society as a sophomore. She recently graduated from Massachusetts school of Art and Design (MASSART). She loved it there and especially enjoys the city (surprised me). She was a glass blowing major there. She now works for a couple of different artist studios mainly in stain glass. Like the boys she was a student ambassador with trips to Canadian Rockies and Australia in middle school. As for me personally I am active in my parish that I grew up in here in Taunton. I am in the Knights of Columbus there, and I am an usher. I am retired now (waiting for my wife who should be soon as she still works at company). I have given up all my sports and some of my other responsibilities now (many softball leagues including one in Carver after 34 years on the same team). Yet I now enjoyed coaching Nathan's semi pro team starting in 2022 after retiring and being asked to do so. Got them to playoffs in 2022 and first place finish and championship in 2023.. On my first season the league asked me to coach one of the conference All Star teams, and again in 2023. I somehow (maybe because I have the look) now play Santa Claus for a bunch of events. I did 7 years as president of BP parents council and saw some alumni around there now and again (Louie Borges, Tim Holick - school committee members). I donate platelets every 2 weeks for years now and I am closing in on my 600 donations. I represent BP on the reunion committee with the combined THS, CC and BP schools. Sorry for going on as much as I did, and hopefully I didn't lose you. In closing, may life reward you with all that you need and desire. Till we see each other again (hopefully at a reunion).
