Robert's Story
Life
I was born on a farm in Eastern Ohio; my earliest memory of my place in this world was at five years and it was looking at the sky.....wondering why I was here and what my place was in the relation to my environment. I attended a rural school and had a good relationship with my classmates and neighbors. This is mostly because I was unaware (for the most part) of the social (mostly racial) conditions of my time. Race was not everything or most things, but was part of everything that happened. I had two teachers at Georges Run School who were extremely dedicated to teaching and I was an apt pupil, even though the system was not dedicated to my advancement. I loved my classmates and neighborhood! High school was a shock. It was the first time that I had been around other African American students and I no longer knew my place and felt that I was in a hostile environment....still, I felt that if others got to know me, everything would be all right. In some ways it wasn't, and in some ways it was. Since then, I have been many things, had many jobs, traveled many places, and explored many worlds. Now at 67 years, I have now found my place in this world, but wonder where my place is in the Universe? Where my place is in Eternity? and what the purpose of all this was. .....not much different from my thoughts at five years! The world is so much larger today than it was yesterday. Things became clearer when I found that in Life, the journey is important: not the destination, people may have all the a...Expand for more
nswers: not all my answers, and that as long as the questions are greater in number than the answers, Life is worth living.
School
I guess that I don't have many really good or bad memories of school. I have good memories of some people. I remember some who were friendly and supportive: George Carney, John Buchanan, Joan Ford, and some others. It was an uncomfortable time of life for me (maybe it is for most teenagers). One thing that I have learned is that it is better not to judge yesterday's experiences with today's logic. I don't like the person who I was at that time. I like the person who I am now.....guess that it is just "growing up". I don't think that Wintersville was such a good school; my best learning experiences were at the public library and after school. I live on Keystone Dr in Columbus in case anyone wants to call.
Military
I am now 67 years old and must remember that my experiences were from the perspective of a young man in his early 20s. I visited the Poulsbo IFC area in the 70s and there was a day care center where we spent so much time. I also have talked with several people with whom I was stationed and each seemed to have a different experience. Along with different individula perspectives, the experience was different .. depending on whether one was white, African American, or Mexican. It was an experience that occurred in a beautiful place at an almost magical time of life. The premonition of change seemed to ring in the air.. I will remember it as long as I live.
