Robert's Story

Well, how do i summarize nearly 50 years in a short description that anyone might be interested in reading? Following high school graduation, I attended Kenyon College, which is about an hour outside of Columbus between ‘75-79. From there, I attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine between ‘79-‘83, leading to my MD degree. In 1980, I married Laurie Mendel, who grew up on Barth Drive in Liberty. We had been dating since high school. We’ve just celebrated our 43rd wedding anniversary this summer. From my medical school graduation, we moved to Baltimore where I worked my ass off for 5 years, first in my Internal Medicine Residency at Johns Hopkins/Baltimore City Hospital, then in my Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Maryland Cancer Center. We loved Baltimore, and our first daughter, Janna was born in Baltimore in 1986. Well, the magnet of family brought us back to Liberty Township from 1988-2002. I worked with the Hematology/Medical Oncology group (blood diseases and cancer medicine) at South Side and North Side Medical Centers during that time. I also practiced at the Warren hospitals during this time period. One danger of vacationing in Colorado is the likelihood that you’ll fall in love with the mountains, climate and lifestyle. Yup, after several vacations in Colorado while living in Youngstown, it became clear to us that we needed to move to the Denver area of Colorado. During our Youngstown years, our second daughter, Rachel was born in 1989. So with our daughters starting 11th grade and 7th grade, we moved to Longmont, Colorado (10 miles outside of Boulder, Colorado ) in the summer of 2002. ...Expand for more
My career got a bit easier, with more time to enjoy the outdoors once we moved in 2002. Our kids loved being in Colorado, and my older daughter, Janna attended Colorado State University, graduating in 2008. Our younger daughter, Rachel escaped cold weather and attended Arizona State University in the Phoenix area, and graduated in 2011. She has lived in the Phoenix area and now has two sons, age 6 and 2, and the family somehow tolerates Phoenix summers . Our older daughter, Janna lived in Los Angeles for 10 years, but after her marriage in 2016, moved back to Denver in 2017. She and her husband now live in the Denver suburbs with two sons, age 5 and 18 months. We live 20 minutes away, and are fortunate to live close to them. At age 60, after 30 years in my medical career, I was ready to just go out and have fun outside every day. So I retired in June, 2018. We have a home in the center of the Colorado ski resorts, in Summit County, Colorado. Yes, life at 9,400 feet elevation brings lots of rewards and difficulties. Summers are unbelievably great, but winter starts way too early and lasts way too long. Fortunately, we have a house in the south Denver suburbs, so we can take the short drive that takes us between three climate zones that exist from Denver to the Colorado mountains. When weather’s okay, we’re outside daily. Summer allows some golf, kayaking, cycling, hiking and winter allows winter hiking, snowshoeing, downhill skiing, and cross country skiing. Yeah, and in this place, you have to wear sunscreen 12 months of the year. It’s challenging to exercise above 9,000 feet elevation, but we’ve adapted to it over the past 20 years.
