Robert's Story
After Maury I started the Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding. I got 3 months into the school when the Army asked me to join them for a couple of years, which I did. I ended up guarding Boston from nuclear attack and then came back to the Yard. I though I would get my feet back on the ground and look around. I have been there for 44 years now. I stayed connected with the service and spent another 25 years in the reserves and National Guard. I got a commission as a combat engineer and commanded a company in Hopewell and Richlands, Va.
I retired as a Major, but ...Expand for more
had the most fun as a commander.
I am married to a Maury girl, Diann Carlson class of 64. We have to boys 33 and 36, both married and doing well.
I am still in the Yard, but 3 years ago I left the Waterfront and front line supervision to work in advance planning of the next class of aircraft carriers. After 40 years in the rain, heat and cold it was nice to be dry and warm. It is kind of boring at times, but after 2 sessions of heart by-pass I just could not take the stress any more.
That were I am now.. I build deck chairs and study history in my spare time.
