Robert's Story

Life I spent three interesting years in the U.S. Navy; three ships, many seas. Got an "early out" off the U. S. S. Staten Island in March 1962 to start school. That didn't last long. But did go back (Portland State University) in 1964. Received my BS in History and Political Science in 1969, then a Masters in American Diplomatic History with an emphasis in U. S. - China relations, in 1971. Went on to Columbia for a summer of Chinese language studies, then to Iowa to work on my doctorate. Finally burned out in 1972 and went to work for a community college in Texas City, Texas. I remained there for twelve years, eight of which I spent as Director of International Programs and as Executive Director of the Gulf Coast Council on Foreign Affairs (which I founded). That position took me to China a couple of times, many locations in Europe and Mexico; also spent a great deal of time in Washington, D.C.--mostly at the Department of State. Went to the Houston World Trade Association, as Executive Director, in 1984. Weathered that for four years, then tried international consulting for four. It wasn't lucrative, so I took over a history museum in 1992 running that till late 1999, when I went into the investment business. I did quite well at that, with about $20 mil in assets under management when I sold my business in June, 2019. I passed the Uniform Investment Advisor Law exam (2009). I did a lot of retirement planning and estate management. I also completed training in financial life-planning through the Kinder Institute in Boston. I am writing my memoir and spend a couple of days a week in the University of Houston Library's Special Collections, where my papers relating to the foreign affairs council are archived. I used to play racquetball four days a week but a torn rotator cuff (unrepairable) has taken me out of that. I try ...Expand for more
to maintain a regular workout regimen at least six hours a week with a trainer. Will try to play pickleball as soon a I complete physical therapy on my left knee (45 years of running and playing racquetball has taken its toll). I don't spend a lot of time in my yard anymore. That has become somewhat difficult. Had to hire a yard guy to do the work. I continue to lead an annual, eight-week foreign policy study-discussion program at my church; bringing in six to seven speakers on related topics each year. The program has about 100 participants. I was introduced to the program when an undergraduate at PSU, so have been involved for over fifty years. Am active in the Unitarian Universalist Church. I try to go to Atlanta several times a year to visit with my daughter Heather, her former husband Andy and their three beautiful daughters. Of the three; two are twins and all are in-vitro. I also have four more granddaughters in Texas. With kids and grandkids in the South, it's not likely that I will ever make it back to Portland except for visits. I established a History Scholarship Endowment Fund at Portland State University. I serve on the Advisory Board of the Center for International Studies at Houston's University of St. Thomas. I've had a long-time relationship with the Center over the past 40 some years. Janet and I enjoy getting together for dinners with Lyman and Jane Rigby and Emily (Erickson) and husband, And crap! I am finally getting and feeling old. Not a good experience. As noted, I retired from the investment side of my business (on my 78th birthday). I'll continue to manage my insurance and annuity business until my replacement gets up to speed on that side of the business. I am working on my memoirs. Not sure I will ever finish. It will be entitled "What the Hell Am I Doing Here? I'm a High School Dropout!"
