Robert's Story
Hi Fellow UHS'69 Classmates!
First, just wanted to say what a great time I had at our 40th Ann. Reunion
up at the Parsippany Hilton in July, 2009!! While I did
chat with some of you who went, I
didn't get a chance to catch up with
more of you then. Alot of you asked about my life. Briefly,
here's what happened: BA,Kean, Elem. Ed.,w/
minor in History/Social sciences, grad.'73;
Kean grad. program in Ed.& Contemporary
Civ, 1976-77; Rutgers Grad. School of
Ed., 1977-82, grad. w/MED degree in
Ed. Theory, History, & Philosophy, 1982. Kean grad. program, Ed.Policy
Sciences/History, 1983-1984. Employed
as private prep school teacher(Elem.& Secondary Humanities & Social Studies courses); and family social worker(Union
County Social Services); also employed in private companies and
worked in federal Dept. of Commerce.
Here in central PA: for awhile
involved with private social agency;
and taught on jr. college level at
private institute. I retired early
because of serious hearing problem
(which some of you may remember from
our high school days). I never married(but wanted to),
but live comfortably here in south-central
PA. Interests: attend classical music
concerts, art shows/museums, have traveled
(in Europe & around N. America,northern Mexico,and Bermuda); read
biographies, historical non-fiction,
classic literature. Sports: biking, swimming;
tennis, basketball with my younger cousins; played baseball on organized local church
team, and I work out most days at nearby Planet Fitness gym. My volunteer work: local food
bank(which I helped start in 2002); local board member of CEF International (we
provide educational/extra-curricular activties
for millions of children nationwide), march in the Honor Guard with [Sons of] The American Legion Band,
and help support our Altoona[PA] Symphony Orchestra (I've s...Expand for more
ung baritone/bass in community Festival Choirs
accompanied by our orchestra in local Cathedral and on local TV).
I'm a retired member of Rutgers Alumni/Delta
Xi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, International Education
Honor Society of teachers, school
administrators, and college faculty. Added Comment: Beginning in Rutgers
grad. school years, I was active in
various academic/professional societies
associated with my Rutgers program, such as the History Of Education Society; on this basis I was nominated
for inclusion (but not listed) in a
couple of Who's Who books, including
Marquis Who's Who (for which I received a nomination letter for 1985 edition). On this basis also I have privately successfully
recommended some students to the (accredited) colleges of their choice. Update: I could add that my mother passed way over here in PA on January 4, 2013...I arranged for and hosted her services and funeral myself (I also gave the eulogy), assisted by pastor-friend Rev. Mark. R. Brown (Westminster Presbyterian Church) and others.
Since I have alot of relatives and friends over here in PA, about 80 people attended mom's funeral (including our UHS '69 classmate Bruce Bailey [p. 35 in yearbook], and schoolmate Charles Evans UHS '68). Otherwise,
I'm fine, and keep busy with my usual volunteer work mentioned above. If you would like to see mom's obituary
article go to the website of our Altoona Mirror website, and click on for obituaries; mom's full name was:
Marjorie Louise (Schilling) Hartwig. The latest news (February 2013) is that my older brother Danny (UHS'65) & his wife Sharon's daughter (only child) Larissa and her husband Mike had a baby girl on Feb. 5, 2013, which made me a great-uncle! Larissa & baby are fine. I plan to go home to NJ this spring to visit the family & see the baby. Otherwise, I'm fine!
