Robert's Story
Life
I grew up as a Coast Guard brat, moving from base to base every few years. Books of all kinds became my favorite companions, although I did stay in NJ long enough (4th thru 9th grades) to make some lifelong friends. I did very well in school (thanks to some great teachers!) and won several math and science awards while at Antilles HS in San Juan, PR. I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Aero Engineering at Rensselaer Poly in Troy, NY in 5 years, the last year with a wife and child. We moved to Hampton, VA where I worked at NASA Langley until their 1971 Reduction in Force. Fortunately, Ford was hiring engineers, and we have lived, worked and raised our 2 children in S.E. MI since 1972.
I had always been a dutiful child, so it seemed natural to also be a dutiful husband. I supported my wife in her desires to go back to school, get a job, and ride a horse, but when her hobby grew to include a barnful of 6 animals, a gas-guzzling truck, and several wagons, carts and trailers, I was hard pressed to meet all the demands I felt at home! Over the 4 years after we moved to a 10-acre ranch I gradually became more and more tired and depressed. Following several months of declining sleep and ...Expand for more
coping skills and increasing stress levels, I had a panic attack during which I became convinced that I was useless, hopeless, and helpless, and would be unable to enjoy any activities for the rest of my short, miserable life!
Thankfully, my wife took me to our local clinic, where the doctor diagnosed major depression and prescribed antidepressants and counseling. I learned that I needed more time for myself and that I could be happy again if I made my own decisions rather than always deferring to my wife's. I've been feeling better than ever lately, but my wife has been unable to cope with my newfound independence and has chosen to go her own way. Hopefully we can remain friends through our upcoming divorce and live the rest of our lives in relative peace!
Things have improved pretty steadily since the abovbe was written in 2002. . . I now have a loving wife and have been accepted by her family. Between us we have 4 great kids and 3 wonderful grandkids! Ginny is as careful with money as Jan was profligate, so we can afford to go on at least one long trip or cruise each year. I'm enjoying my retirement from Ford and indulging interests in mathematical puzzles and electric-powered RC model planes.
