Robert's Story

Robert Herron was the first member of the DJO class of '67 to join the Armed Forces. At the end of the 11th grade, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. While most of his classmates were in their first year of university, Bob served in combat mainly near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in South Vietnam. He served during the Tet Offensive, which featured some of the heaviest fighting of the Vietnam Conflict. After leaving the Marines, he continued his education. He earned a A.A. in Education at Northern Virginia Community College (1974), B.A. in English at Augusta State University (1975), and a M.S.C.I. degree in Seelisberg, Switzerland (1983). In Iowa, he earned a MBA (1985) and doctoral degree in management (1993). From 1996 to 1998, he did a post-doctoral program in the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease that was funded by the National Institutes of Health. Bob has taught a wide range of business and government courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Bob also conducted research that led to the development of new methods of analyzing medical costs and innovative means for reducing those costs. He has done in-depth policy research in many fields. Robert has also served as a senior policy adviser and researcher for the Natural Law and Reform Parties. He is a researcher at the Center for Systems Analysis and Synthesis. He has lived in many countries, including Spain, India, Germany, Italy, France, Philippines, and Switzerland. He currently lives in Fairfield, Iowa. Robert is currently working as an independent researcher, writer, and consultant in medical cost reduction and health policy. He has just completed a new book, New Knowledge for New Results: A Comprehensive Strategy for Reducing Medical Costs. This book presents an innovative analysis, identifies the actual underlying causes of these skyrocketing expenses, and synthesizes scientific research to present a comprehensive plan for health system reform. He hopes to continue this line of research and writing. He resides in Fairfield, IA with his wife, Ginette, a former nurse from Quebec, Canada.
