Robert's Story

Life Ah, hard to believe it's been 20 years since the Class of '87 spread our wings. So, what have I been up to in that time? After graduation, I went to college at the University of Kansas, majoring in Aerospace Engineering, on an Air Force ROTC scholarship. I did the 5-yr plan and graduated in May, 1992 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the Air Force. I waited about 8 months before going on active duty, so I worked in retail sales at Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers. Once on active duty, I attended Undergraduate Space Training at Lowry AFB, and then moved to Colorado Springs where I flew satellites for 4 years. It was there that I met my future wife, Lisa. As is customary in the military, you move around, so in 1997, we both moved to Vandenberg AFB, in California, where I launched missiles as part of the National Missile Defense Program. Lisa and I were married in June '98 at the Ren Fest down in Larkspur, in full costume, so that was a lot of fun. After 3 years in CA, it was time to move again, but this time it would be as a civilian, as I separated from the service we both hired on with a satellite communications company in Connecticut. We moved cross country again, this time with two dogs added to the family, settling in New Milford. See a trend??? We only live in states that start with "C." We planned on being in CT for a while, so we bought a nice house on nearly 1.5 acres in almost wilderness. However, as things would have it, the company we worked for became a take-over candidate, and we did not like what we were seeing, so we decided to search for other employment. During this time, we learned we were expecting our first child, so there was some added pressure to find something soon. There must have been a greater plan laid out for us, because in the middle of our job search, which included possible jobs in aircraft technical sales, and even buying our own shooting range, one of Lisa'...Expand for more
s past co-workers at Lockheed Martin called her about a job opening back in Denver. While we had decided that Lisa was going to be a stay-at-home mom, I was able to convince them I was the right person for the job, as a launch team lead, and we made plans to return to Colorado (keeping with the "C" trend) in the fall of '03. The transition was less than smooth; we sold our house in CT, but Lockheed was slow in finalizing my offer, and we were getting very close to not being able to travel due to Lisa's pending delivery. So, we made a leap of faith, packed up our house, the two dogs, and moved to CO, with no official job offer, no house, and 34 weeks pregnant! Lockheed finally came through with an offer just before Thanksgiving, and we closed on our house the week after. Our household goods arrived on Dec 9, our daughter, Carlin Elizabeth, was born on Dec 13, and I started work on Dec 15! After about 2 months on the program, we learned NASA was canceling the contract after President Bush laid out the plan to return to the moon. I was able to find odd jobs around Lockheed until I ended up on the proposal team for the Crew Exploration Vehicle, the follow-on manned vehicle to the space shuttle. After nearly 2 years, Lockheed won the contract last fall, and I've been working as the Project Engineer for the program's landing system. If all goes well, we'll be flying to the space station in 2013 and back to the moon by about 2018. I started working on my Masters in Systems Engineering at the University of Denver, which will be complete this fall, and we welcomed our son, Mitchell Robert, into our family on Jan 18, 2007, so it has been quite an ride. Lisa and I both love being parents, though it is an amazing amount of work. Lisa owns her own business at a knitting instructor and teaches private lessons and classes at local community colleges. So, that's the short version of 20 years since OHS graduation.
