Robert's Story

When Robert Hogge was a child, he attended Lincoln Elementary School, Pocatello, Idaho, from 1946-1952; he was known then as Bobby Hogge or Bob Hogge. After graduating from the sixth grade, he and his parents (Melton and Edna Hogge) moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. On visits to Idaho a few years later, he discovered that Lincoln Elementary School had been razed and replaced with a strip mall. Robert would like to connect with someone who remembers the "old" Lincoln Elementary, especially two of the teachers: Miss Horsley (I forget her given name) who taught first grade in 1946, along with a math teacher (I forget her name) , later on who used to have times tables competitions at the blackboard, girls versus boys. While in Grand Junction, Robert attended and graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1959. In academic year 1959-60, Robert attended Mesa College in Grand Junction; he was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, a scholarship fraternity. During academic years 1960-62, he attended Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. From 1962-65, he served as a full-time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Begium and France. He then returned to Brigham Young University where he earned a B. A. (English major, French minor) in 1967; and an M. A. (American Literature major; Eng...Expand for more
lish Language minor) in 1969. In the English Department Awards Ceremony, he received The Clark/Thomas Award as the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant. Upon receiving his Master's degree, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He served, as a career officer, for twenty years, primarily in the Education and Training career field, spending ten of those years teaching English at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School and at the Air Force Academy, both schools located near Colorado Springs, Colorado. He retired from the United States Air Force at Carswell Air Force Base, Texas, in 1969. He and his family then moved to Layton, Utah, where he began a second teaching career at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah. After twenty-four years as a faculty member in The Department of English Language and Literature, his effective date of retirement will be 1 July 2013. Robert is married to the former Jeanette "Jan" Walker of Burley Idaho (second daughter of Murray and Thelda Walker). They are the parents of four children and twelve grandchildren. During his Air Force career, he attended the University of Arizona and received his Ph.D., September 1980. He recently donated four cases of teaching materials to the Weber State University Archives, housed in the Stewart Library.
