Robert's Story
Life
I grew up, went to college, got a job, saved money, went to europe - Germany - stayed 2 years. Came home, became a partner and a father - raised a daughter, worked steady.
It all fell apart. Picked up the pieces, had to change some things about myself.
Now I am still raising my daughter, working steady (knock on wood), doing volunteer work in church and in men's work.
School
I was mostly shy and bookish in school. Once I got comfortable, I could be arrogant. Mostly I was afraid I was not going to be accepted, since I did not have a 'normal' family.
I went to Lester Shields Elementary; the longest time at any school. I made some friends, and missed the place when I left the foster-home. I came back to that place later and went to Pala Middle School and (most of the) Freshman Year at James Lick. I made the chess team (7th board) but the foster-mom thought it would hurt my studies.
I left that place and transferred to Leigh High, on San Jose's west side. I graduated from there, and went on to San Jose State. As a Junior, I transferred into U.C. Berkeley.
I went from an A- average at SJSU to a C+ average at Cal. Barely survived. Got my degree, officially, in 1987. Kinda burned out and thought I failed my finals. Turned out I passed them all but a ...Expand for more
Pass-No Pass German Conversation class. I went back in 1987 and took a 1 unit class and got my paper. Bachelor's in Physics.
I remember the Counselor at Leigh (Mr. Geraci) said I should become a TV Reparman and forget College. I thank him for giving me someone to prove wrong.
If I ever went through the process again, I would study less 'hard', and take more risks to make friends.
College
I went to San Jose State for two years, then was accepted to Cal-Berkeley. I was glad to go to Cal, cause I was studying Physics, and it is among the best. I was sad cause my best friend was at UCSD, and I might have been able to go there. It was lonely and tough at Cal. I flunked my first Physics Class. I was on Academic Probation until the middle of my Senior Year. I barely made it....but I MADE IT!
I made some friends, but didn't party much at all. All work and little play......
Workplace
I have been a software engineer for 20 years; a few long-term employment stints, lots of contracting.
I love it, yet I am ready to move on to something else.
I have done lots of volunteer work listening to people, and helping them hear and understand themselves. I get lots of satisfaction from it. - so I wish to move on to a listening/healing profession. 5 cents please....
