Robert's Story
Life
Some of you remember is the quiet, sometimes shy and awkward one who mingled in various extra-curricular activities such as art club, class cabinet or SADD. I definitely socialized with anyone as I felt no one is better or worse than me, so where some people lifted their noses to others, I welcomed them into my circle of friends. I didn't "party" or "hang out at the beach" like most of you during my free time, rather I worked after=school and on weekends.
After high school I went to BCC and then continued to get my BPA and MS from FIU. I managed to work full time after graduating high school and by the time I finished by BPA, I was already in a senior level capacity at work.
As time has hurried past us and seems to roll faster each and every year, I find my life for the most part content. I have a great condo in Dania Beach, a mile from the beach (now I can enjoy it) and an awesome career! I also have a great circle of friends who mean the world to me. Only thing I wish more than anything I had in my life right now, would be a child, even though I am not married.
Would enjoy catching up and re-establishing friendships, making new friends, so drop me a line an say HI, even if we didn't know each other back then. All you got to lose is the chance to not make a new friend!
Still much the same I was back then, not necessarily as shy and nerdy but still very involved in the commmunity. Looking to meet and re-meet friends of all sorts. My family and friends make my world full of celebrations.
School
These high school teachers are the ones who really stand out are Gloria McIntosh, Charlotte Spungin and Carla Stiles all taught me not just about the subjects but about life. Ms. Mac, inspired me to become pro-environmentalist with her dedication to Silent Spring and also taught me how to persevere through rough waters. Ms. Spungin taught me how to study, helped increase my self-esteem and made ...Expand for more
me feel like a first class person, not just a kid in her class. "Spiderlady" Stiles, I longed to have her for art and it wasn't until my senior year. I took art all four years of high school and it was her spirit, her "weirdo" side that captured my creative side and allowed me to express myself not only through various media but through written word with my art. SBHS provided me a lot of great building blocks, but these three individuals have had such a profound effect on who I am today. In a nutshell, "Work Harder to Play Harder" where the items that these three did for me!"
College
Much of my college (including graduate school) years were spent on the road commuting between classes, work and home. So I may not have the traditional views those of you who went away to school and experienced campus life. I however; had the fortune of having one great mentor, Youngkhill Lee, it was later in my education, so time was not on my side to know him long as a student. He opened my eyes to my profession from a research perspective which was different than my usual client or provider perspective as well as helped me develop a life long of learning and teaching others.
Workplace
Can you believe in July 2004 I celebrated 20 years of working for the YMCA??? Who would have had a wild guess that I'd still be hanging around??? I started their a month before we started our freshman year (1984) as a homework tutor for the kids in the after-school program and a CIT in camp. Over the years, I've been in Aquatics, Membership but spent a great deal in Child Care as a group leader (counselor), then a site supervisor then a program director over seeing sites. Now I am the Contract Compliance Director writing and overseeing a budget of nearly $8M in grants and contracts annually. I love what I do and can honestly say most of the time I enjoy my job tremendously. I have a great group of people I work with, like an extended family.
