Robert's Story

Life I had lived in Ewing, New Jersey (a suburb between Trenton and Princeton) since July, 1966. We moved to a senior community in Sun City Center, Florida in February, 2016. Sun City Center is 20 miles south of Tampa on Florida's west coast. I do not miss shoveling snow one tiny little bit. My wife Ottilie and I have had a wonderful life together. We celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary this past February. Like most of you, it hasn't been easy, but it has been good. Ottilie has been totally blind for the last 50 years. However, God, in His providence, has seen fit to use this and other issues to enrich our lives. Ottilie was a rehab teacher of the blind in New Jersey and I'm a retired CPA (Retired in 2006 and yes, I'm still preparing tax returns for others). She retired 22 years ago to spend more time with her aging mother. Her mother passed away 14 years ago at the age of 94. Her mom lived with us for 39 years before she went home to the Lord. Her presence in our home gave our children a perspective on the 1920s, 1930s, & 1940s that they wouldn't get from history books. We have 2 children and 6 grandchildren. My son was a colonel in the Marine reserves and has been to Iraq and back. He retired from the Marines after 30 years of service in May, 2019. My daughter died from cancer in March, 2005. She had a very strong faith and we rest in the knowledge that she is now in the presence of the Lord. Please pray for her 3 boys. They have done well since her passing. adelphia U. 8 years ago with an MBA. Getting a job has proved harder than getting an education but he landed a good one and now lives and works in Portland, Oregon. Her middle boy finished at Penn in December, 2015 (also in Philadelphia). He got an excellent job right out of school, He's now living and working in Chicago and really enjoys it. Her youngest boy finished college in New Jersey this 2 years ago and has joined the world of work. I guess the best way to describe this part of my personal odyssey is that I won't get over my daughter Sharon's passing, but I continue getting used to it. Ottilie and I continue to stay quite busy and share many of the same interests. Those common interests have included prison ministry, blindness organizations, vacations and home Bible studies. I still teach the Bible in my home every Thursday evening. We started going on cruises 22 years ago. We've been on 22 in the Americas, Hawaii and Europe. We went to Israel and Jordan in October, 2019. It was something we wanted to do for a number of years. It was the trip of a lifetime! When I was in the army, I was a medic. Six years ago I picked up where I left off in the army. I now work as an EMT on the local volunteer emergency squad. Our credo is "neighbors helping neighbors." I can't thank God enough for putting me in a position to live for others in my later years. Please feel free to drop me an e-note. We are very pleased with our move to Florida. My best regards to all of you. May God richly bless you all.
