Robert's Story
After graduation, I enrolled at LACC. I was undecided on a major but was leaning into technical background such as engineering either in the electrical or mechanical areas. After two years, I transferred to Cal State LA in spring of 1973 and begin taking classes centering on an engineering curriculum. However, it was around this time that there were massive layoffs in the engineering industry and I began to get disinterested in my education believing it was leading to a dead end despite many assurances from the professors that it was only a short term temporary condition. It didn¿t matter what anybody said. I ended dropping out during the fall quarter and decided to take a break and collect my thoughts of what I was going to do.
During this time, I had been working part time at Ralphs Grocery Co. Eventually, I became fulltime and for the moment, I forgot about returning to college. I continued to work at Ralphs until 1985. Technology started to take shape in our lives in the workplace with scanners at the check stand that scanned prices on items and the 1st generation of computers where making their way into our lives. With this high interest came a new wave of demand for field technicians to repair this equipment which was at the time was mostly exclusive to the office environment. Technical schools were formed and I enrolled into one and learned electrical and digital theory which helped me to get a job with Harris Lanier and was hired as an electronic field technician in 1985. I only worked there for a year and a half. I was disappointed in the working environment there and sensing frustration of client's problems from the lack of support from others whose job it was to provide. As a result, I was used quite frequently as a "punching bag" for customers complaints due to no fault of my own. My stress level was beyond my limit. I left in 1987 and luckily Ralphs rehired me back.
I was not happy to return back. Not too long after being rehired, an acquaintance suggested I go down to the Personnel Department for The City of Los Angeles and put in a job notification request for E...Expand for more
lectrical Craft Helper. Thanks to my technical school training I scored high enough to be hired within a year and so began my new career in April of 1988. I then promoted to my current position of Electrical Repairer whose main job function is to provide support in the repair and support to plant personnel of our in basin generators at various locations from Owens Valley to the harbor and coastal areas of Los Angeles. Although it was a long hard road, I finally found where to place myself within my original goal in the electrical and mechanical field. I am in my 21st year.
I am currently married to my wonderful wife, Robin for 7 years now. Between my 3 children and her 4, we have a total of 10 grandchildren. We were married in the Caribbean at the Turks and Caicos Islands on Easter Day March 2002. It was also there that I was certified for scuba diving as Robin already was. We have also swum with the sea turtles in Hawaii on the north shore of Oahu. We've visited there about 7 times so far. The Virgin Gorda and Tortola Islands on the Caribbean side were also visited. It is an entirely different and spectacular world underwater.
To partially quote a famous line in a John Denver song, I too was born in the summer of my 27th year, as I was introduced to backpacking at this age. From there developed my interest into photography to document my travels hiking and backpacking in the Sierras and Los Padres areas. Raising a family and career choices suspended continuation of my adventures back then but the intent was always to return back to the mountains someday. We have discovered Alpine, Utah which is surrounded by 11,000 foot peaks of the Uinta Range and our house is approximately at the 5,000 foot elevation. Our back yard is Zion, Bryce Canyon, Moab, Park City, Sundance, Lake Powell, the Grand Canyon just to name a few and our neighbors are Yellowstone and the Rocky Mountains.
I am hoping to find similar work for Rocky Mountain Power which is the Utah utility. I am optimistic but cautious due to current conditions in the economy. Until then, I will keep my day job.
