We returned to Arizona in late 1973 and the practice of law also running political campaigns throughout the country from 1973-1981. In February 1981 President Reagan nominated me to be Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs and we returned to Washington. Served there for the entire first term of the Reagan Administration. Was in charge of Department's entire legislative program (criminal law, antitrust, environmental, immigration, etc.) - advancing legislation, opposing legislation, representing Executive in congressional investigations and confirming federal judges. In charge of confirmation of Sandra Day O'Connor. In 1985 became Vice President-Washington for CBS reporting to CEO. Also was member of the Executive Committee of the National Association of Broadcasters. Nadia headed congressional relations for NASA. In 1988, despite having to give up 24/7 limo, tickets to every theatrical and sports event in DC and most across country, I sought opportunities greater than defending Dan Rather and keeping beer advertising on TV. I joined the LA-based international law firm, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and established its legislative practice. In 1999 left Gibson Dunn to become "number two" in client, Hawthorne & York, a technology development company based in Phoenix. The Defense Department is financing our building of the infrastructure for our patented technology that will change the way composites are made. Nadia heads the US-Ukraine Foundation which we established in 1990 - the oldest American presence in Ukraine with operations starting in the Soviet Union. The Foundation runs the most successful democracy program in the former Soviet Union. Helping to build a nation is facinating and hard but it was more "fun" in the days of the Soviet Union with the cloak and dagger stuff, good guy-bad guy intrigue. Two children: Andrij 17; Deanna 15.
