Robert's Story

Life After working 30yr. as a railroad conductor/brakeman on the Norfolk&Portsmouth Beltline Railroad here in Portsmouth,Va., I had to retired due to health reasons in Jan. of 2004. I started a small transport company in the fall of 2004,called B&M Transport to transport cars and travel trailers[camping] between dealerships,up and down the east coast. I also stay busy with my three grandchildren, The ages range from 16, 9,and 12 two girls& a boy] They keep me on the go, attending there special events. Also very active in the Lions club that I belong to.I just step down after being President of the club for the last three years.I also drive the Lions sight and hearing van to different Lions clubs as needed. In March of 08 I went back to work as a delivery driver for a sign company here in Chesapeake,Va. [Still burning up the roads] As you see I stay very busy for somebody that is suppose to be Retired. School The Teacher who inspired me the most was Mrs.Constance Canfield. She was my 11th and 12th grade English teacher, who open the world of the english language,to a young man who could not talk or communicate very well. College In the fall of 1978,I went to Tidewater Community College, and useing the GI bill took a course in Automotive Technological. This course teaches the student, how the automotive systems in a car works and how to fix those systems. The Instructors taught the students how the automotve engines works, the brake system, the fuel systems, the transmission, standard and automatic works, the heating and air cond...Expand for more
itioning systems and how to read the trouble codes of the cars or trucks. The students not only had class room time, but worked on cars or trucks that were brought into the shop. The students rebuild the complete engines, transmissions in these cars, that were not running when they were towed into the shop. I finished this course in 1982. I use the knowledge I learned from this course, to keep my own cars and trucks running. It also came in handy with the 1970 Plymouth Duster race car that I built, and drove at the local dragstrips on the weekends. Military I enlisted in the U.S.Coast Guard,in the fall of 1968,I had to wait until Jan. of 1969 to find out when I was going to bootcamp. I went to bootcamp in Feb of 69 at Cape May N.J.for 9 weeks of training in seamanship, close order drill,[marching] how to take orders and work together as a unit. Upon graduating,in April of 69, I got orders to report to the U.S.Coast Guard Cutter Confier, in Portsmouth,Va. This ship was a 180ft. ocean going bouytender.I worked in the engine room on the Diesel engines. The ship worked the upper Chesapeake Bay working aids to navagation,in the bay and the rivers that flowed into it. We also worked in the Altantic Ocean and the approcahes to the Chesapeake Bay.We also came to the rescue of a many wayward boater. Had a good time aboard this ship. I was transfer to the Coast Guard Base,Portsmouth in Jan of 1972, I stayed there until my enlistment was up in Feb of 1973.If I had to do over again, I would have made a career out of the Coast Guard for at least 30yr.
