Robert's Story

Workplace after High School: After AHS I spent a year at Huntington School for Boys (in Boston) [now part of Chapel Hill - Chauncy Hall] to sharpen my educational skills and learning in preparation for college (or so my father insisted). I must admit that after AHS I wasn't really ready for college and did need another year to "mature." The next year I was admitted to and attended Tufts University (B.A. - Class of 1970). After graduating from Tufts, I was suddenly drafted into the US Army in October, 1970 since my draft number had come up. Not wanting to serve "on the ground" in Viet Nam, that same day I ran down to the US Navy Recruiter's Office in Medford Square and enlisted for 4 years as a regular sailor (the Recruiter back-dated my enlistment papers by 2 or 3 days), with an active duty reporting date of April 19, 1971 [keep in mind the military didn't really need English and Math majors at that time -- just warm bodies to fill the trenches]. On Halloween, Oct. 1970, I married my first wife, also from AHS Class of '65. For the next 6 months, we lived at her parents' summer home in Plymouth and did substitute teaching at various schools. On April 19, 1971, I "shipped out" from the Charlestown Navy Yard and headed to boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois. After boot camp and additional training in San Diego, I spent 42 months at Subic Bay in the Philippines and many other parts of SE Asia (1971-1975) during the Vietnam mess. During that time I coached Little League Baseball (on Base), taught Shakespeare courses in the Base junior college program, did other civic activities on the Base and in the local community and traveled a lot. Although I was in the US Navy, I never spent even one day on a ship (except for lunch one day when a friend's ship pulled into port). I ended up being a ground-troop after all -- most time in the Philippines. I tried my best to make the most of a bad situation during all this time. I also served as liaison between the enlisted men and the officers, advising the officers of the enlisted men's dispositions and reactions to political and military events -- and most especially when Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon announced his resignation as our President. One year, I was chosen as a personal body guard to President Ferdinand Marcos of the Phillipines for a week's event celebrating Veteran's Day. Due to that assignment, I was also invited to be a special guest of Imelda Marcos (you know, the lady with the 1,000+ pairs of shoes and later President of the Philippines) at the opening of the Philippines' Center for the Fine Arts. At one point, I was named "Sailor of the Year" for the US Navy -...Expand for more

During all this time, I also attended Pepperdine University's extension program and received my Masters Degree in Education in March, 1975. During this time, my only son, Adrian Edward, was born (1974). By the time I was discharged, jobs had become scarce since everyone was getting out of the service because the Vietnam War had ended. I ended up driving a refrigerated trailer truck through the streets of Boston for about a year (even with a Masters Degree) delivering fresh fowl, frozen food, etc. to Boston's restaurants, hotels and several state prisons. In 1976 I enrolled at Northeastern for a year (thinking of a career teaching either English or mathematics), but then was accepted at Suffolk University Law School (J.D. - 1979). I did receive a K-12 teaching certification from Northeastern University, and cherish it as much as any other degrees/certificates I have. During law school, I taught Advanced English and Advanced Mathematics for the Acton-Boxborough High School for one year, then taught basic and Advanced Mathematics for Polaroid Corporation for two years, and worked as a bank teller in Lexington at the former Leader Federal and Savings and Loan Bank. I later taught Business Law and Real Estate courses for a local junior college in Fitchburg, Massachusetts for 4 years. My daughter, Olivia, was born in Concord in 1984. I have been in private practice now for 44+ years, focusing primarily on Family Law, Mediation and Estate Planning. Divorced in 1992. Married Cynthia L. Hamilton (also AHS '65) in 1995; 2 step-children, Alexander and Anna. In 2008 Cynthia and I returned to reside in Arlington, Massachusetts. She bought back her childhood home from the lady her parents had sold it to nearly 50 years ago and we now live on Jason Street. In 2009 I moved my law practice from Lunenburg to Arlington. We now live at 45 Jason St. and my office was 10 houses away at 754 Mass. Ave. (corner of Jason and Mass. Ave.) before I closed it and retired (well, almost). Favorite activities: Genealogy and, until 2020, riding my Kawasaki Vulcan 900 cruiser motorcycle into the sunset and looking to retire!!! After being nearly blown off the highway by an 18-wheeler, I traded in my 6th motorcycle for a gas-powered scooter. I am a die-hard Sox, Pats, Bruins and Celts fan. My stepson, Alexander, owned season tickets to every fourth Red Sox home game until 2023, when it became too difficult for me to attend games (COPD). Still practicing for 3 clients as of June, 2025. We attended our 50th AHS Reunion -- over a 3 day period. It was fabulous.

My thoughts on the Women's March:
Isn't it about time I pulled this out of the garage, washed it down and went for a long ride?
Was at Fenway Park tonight watching the Sox beat the pants off Seattle (15-1) with a high school classmate I hadn't seen for 50 years, Bruce Davidson. We had a fabulous time. [The cute young lady on my right was from Kans
