Robert's Story

Life My life hasn't progressed exactly as I planned when I was younger - but if life were that predictable, it would be so boring. Here is a thumbnail: - Left Kalamazoo Central after Junior year to attend Western Michigan - it seemed safer than what was going on a Central at the time! - Transfered sophomore year to the University of Michigan where I studied honors math. My second day at Michigan I met a woman named Nancy at a get-acquainted picnic. More on that later. My last semester there, the State of Michigan ran out of money and reneged on a scholarship promise, so I got a job, where I met a couple of Aerospace Engineers who were thinking of forming a business. Again, more later. - Math next took me Cornell, where I concentrated on Infinite Dimensional Topology. During my four years there, I taught calculus and differential equations, which I really enjoyed. I continued to be convinced that I would end up a professor at a small liberal arts college. - Those guys from U-M formed that company, and summers and vacations, they hired me to help them put their numerical simulation work ...Expand for more
on a sound footing. While I was hot on my thesis ("Obstructions to Placing Ends on Foliations over Infinite Dimensional Manifolds"), they offered me a stake in the company, Airflow Sciences Corporation, and my life plans changed. - I had always remained close to that girl from the picnic, and being back in Michigan made things much more clear. Nancy and I were married soon thereafter. - We bought a house and moved to Canton - and have been there ever since. - Our daughter graduated Summa Cum Laude with Department High Honors from The College of William and Mary! She is now completing her Masters at the University of Texas and plans on a Ph.D. program of her own. - In 1994 we sold Airflow - which was a disaster. Two of us bought it back, whereupon I became company president. - Along the way, I have been quite active at church, am very involved in choral music, worked on community projects, and faced the joys, sorrows, sicknesses, successes, defeats, and day-to-day life that make up this world. All in all, it hasn't been a bad ride so far. Hope the same can be said for you and your family.
