One of robert's favorite quotes is:"Merry Christmas, Movie House! My sister Maggie really hit the nail on the head when she said that trying to think of something poetic or grand to say about Matt Parks wouldn't do him the honor or justice he deserves. I couldnt agree more. Having said that I'm going to try anyway.... You see, when maggie made this point I don't think she realized that, in a sense, she was actually doing exactly what she said was so impossible. Thank you Maggie. In my humble opinion I think Matt was exceptional in all the ways that are too often overlooked. He was well mannered and polite, genuine, caring, responsible, compassionate, and generous to a fault. He never took out his own frustration or discomfort on others even at the lowest possible moments. He put the feelings and well being of his family and friends first, often at the expense of his own, and did so happily and gracefully. Unfortunately these qualities are too often viewed as commonplace or trivial when, in fact, they are as rare and valuable as anything could be in this world. When I think of Matt I am reminded of one of the most well known characters in cinema history and, at the risk of sounding like a "film nerd" as Matt would have called me, I would like to explain why. You see, I feel that Matt shares a kindred spirit in the character of George Bailey from the classic film "It's a Wonderful Life". Bailey is a man with big dreams and ambitions who dreams of leaving his small hometown which he has come to resent. Geor...Expand for more
ge, like Matt, continually puts his own goals and ambitions on the back burner for the sake of his family and friends without a second thought and, because he views these actions as things you "should" or are "supposed to do" he fails to see the true value of his deeds. Due to Georges humility he does not realize the impact his life has had on the lives of those around him. He watches as the other people he grew up with build families, become millionaires, and war heros, without realizing that all of these things would have been impossible without him. In these ways I feel he is very similar to Matt. I think all of us that were lucky enough to know this man, if even for a short time, can easily say our lives are far better for having known him. Whether it was the support he provided to encourage us to follow a dream, introducing us to other friends and loved ones that have enriched our lives, or possibly just lending us his truck to help us move without question or hesitation. He never asked for anything in return even though he clearly deserved it, and many would say that he would always be the first one to show up and lend a hand when the chips were down. Bailey's guardian angel Clarence said it best when he said "Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" I couldn't agree more. So i would like to say thank you Matt. You are truly appreciated. I love you, and will never forget you or what you taught me. Remember, Matt: "No man is a failure who has friends." So here's a toast to my best friend Matt, the richest man in town. Patrick M. Antone P.S. Matt, you were not a great friend. You were not a best friend. You were a PERFECT friend. Thank you, from all of us. For, we can never repay you. See More By: Patrick Antone .".
