Robert's Story

Life They won't let me post my e-mail address here but it starts with rphilpotjr and ends with gmail.com We're currently in Jackson, MS where I am starting the state's first PA program at Mississippi College. But before this... After High School I hung out in Gainesville for a few months working at Joe's Deli on 13th St. By December I was at basic training in Ft. Jackson, SC. Then medic training in San Antonio, TX. My first assignment was as a medic on a helicopter ambulance in Hawaii (A great gig for an 18 year old kid from rural North Florida.) Following my first tour with the Army, I married Cynthia Pursell from Jackson, MS. After my undergraduate education at Belhaven College, I went to Officer Candidate School and was sent to Alaska as an artillery officer, where I ran into Roy Lewis. He was working for ARCO and would occasionally come by our house in Wasilla. He was drilling for oil, I was shooting cannon. While in Alaska, we had two sons, Rob and Austin. Sometimes I think that the only thing Cynthia remembers about Alaska is being pregnant! Following my Alaska tour, I commanded the 260th Field Artillery Detachment at Ft. Rucker, AL. I never thought I would enjoy shooting cannon, but I found that it was a wonderful combination of physics and explosives (two of my favorite pastimes). While in East L.A, (Eastern Lower Alabama,) I earned a Master's degree in Counseling Ps...Expand for more
ychology. In '92 I left the Army to go to PA school at Emory University on a National Health Service Corps Scholarship. I soon found myself providing medical care for migrant farm workers in Parrish, FL. During this time I also joined the FL Army National Guard (I just couldn't get enough.) In 1998 I accepted a position as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UF Physician Assistant Program. It was great to return to Gator Country. We lived in Gainesville from '98 to '06. As the mideast grew more unstable, the "gummint" decided I would be of more use in Iraq. So I deployed with the 161st Area Support Medical Battalion to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon returning from OIF I jumped in with both feet and finished the PhD I had been working on for almost seven years. But not without a few interruptions to do hurricane relief work following the 2004 FL hurricanes and following Hurricane Katrina in Waveland-Bay St. Louis, MS. By January, 2006 I decided I've had enough fun and retired from the Army. Once my kids have finished high school, we moved to Savannah, GA where I've accepted a position with South University. We lived in a little community called Lake George about 40 miles SW of Savannah. This was redneck living at it's best. So now we've relocated to Jackson, MS. We're staying in a cabin on the Pearl River while we house hunt and try to sell (or lease) our Savannah home.
