Robert's Story
Life
After I left Mt. SAC in 1968, I joined the Navy and went to bootcamp in San Diego. I was sent to Georgia to attened AirControlman "A" school. My first duty station was NS Midway Island (1yr).I returned to Georgia for Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) School and Carrier Controlled Approach (CCA) School w/NTDS then to NAS Lemoore, Ca. for SPN-42 (final radar) School before reporting to USS Kittyhawk (CV-63)in San Diego (1yr). We made an 8 month WESTPAC cruise to Viet Nam. I met my wife, Esther, while home on leave (Jul71)and reported to NAF El Centro,Ca. where I spent 4 and a half years. I married Esther in Feb 72. I was transfered to Adak,Ak. in Jan 76. Two weeks before we left Alaska I found out I had made Chief. We transfered to NWC China Lake, Ca. (Aug78). g a P-3 aircraft from running into a mountain in Alaska. WE only spent 2 years and 10 months at China Lake because I applied for a commission as a Limited Duty Officer and was selected and commissioned in Apr 81. We transfered to NAS Moffett Field,Ca. where we spent 2 and a half years before I was sent to USS Constellation (CV-64) in San Diego. I actually went to Bremerton, Wa. for 6 months because the ship was in drydock for overhaul. I made a 6 month cruise to the Indian Ocean before transferring to NAS Memphis, Tn. in Jan 86. I went to NAS Mayport in Jun 89 leaving my family in Tn. I retired on 1Jan92 and returned to Memphis for 1 year. I went to work for Wal-Mart before we moved to Apple Valley, Ca. I worked for Wal-Mart until 2000 when I had to quit because of heart problems. Now and for the last 7 years I do a whole lot of nothing.
