Robert's Story
After college I was drafted and sent to Vietnam. Stayed there 1 year in the Army and after completing my service, I went back to Southeast Asia and worked another 8.5 years in hostile fire combat zones in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos for the feds...the Department of Defense (DOD), ITT. Sea Land, and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to rebuild Vietnam. I served as the Administrator to the International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) (the 4-country delegation created by the 1972 Paris Peace Accords to supervise the ceasefire in Vietnam).
When the Communist North Vietnamese took over the Country in April 1975, I left my home, life, everything behind and returned to the US with one suitcase as a refugee and started all over again.
I volunteered with the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) from Geneva and the US Interagency Task Force for Indochina Refugees and served throughout Southeast Asia and the US to locate and reunite families.
Moved to San Francisco in 1976 and retired from the City and County of San Francisco in 2010 after serving in training and development for 31.5 years. I enjoyed most serving the City and County's 26,000 employees and 60 departments/agencies as the Director of Learning and Development.

rk on my home and rental house (which are conveniently next to each other). They are surrounded by parks, a reservoir, trees and a view of the ocean (a little bit of country in the city). I volunteer in Church and elsewhere when opportunities are there. I like to sing even though others may not appreciate it.
My son, Anthony, is 38, married with 3 children, is a general contractor, and has his own small business. He lives next door in one of our family homes. He is the personification of the "Built To Last" philosophy with his family and in his work.
I have been blessed with beautiful grandchildren and a healthy and prosperous life. After working for 45 years, often 10-12 hours a day, my typical week now consists of 6 Saturdays and a Sunday :).
My family members in Middletown have passed on. I have nieces and nephews in Syracuse, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida.
"We shall not cease from exploring, and the end of our exploring will be to arrive at the place where we began and to know it for the first time." – T. S. Eliot
I fondly remember, with a deeper love, appreciation and knowing, my roots in Middletown and the Hudson River Valley, at the foot of the Catskills, with my family who are departed from there, and my childhood friends and classmates. I long to return, yet can never go back to it the way it was.
