Robert's Story
After leaving Fountain, Co and moving to Phillipsburg, KS, Graduated in 74. Met my first and only love there as a senior, then joined the Marine Corp in 75. Came back in 77 and worked in P-burg for a while, then started college at Fort Hays State University in education. Two semesters later, my best friend and me quit college and set off to seek out our fortune building houses in Nebraska. That lasted 3 days. We ended up in Golden, Colorado building houses. A year later, I decided to go back to college. Went to University of Northern Colorado, graduated in Dec. 83 and got my first teaching job in Garden City, Kansas with Special Ed students aged 5 - 11. Spent two years there, then moved to Wichita, Ks to pursue a Masters in Counseling while teaching 2nd grade there. In 94, I took a teaching job in Athens, Greece for 5th grade. Spent 2 years there, came back to the states waiting on a contract to teach in Seoul, South Korea. While waiting, my brother and sister approached me and wanted me to start a coffee business with them in Seattle, Washington. I did and a couple of years into that some mishaps and had to dissolve the business. My parents had retired in Sequim, WA and I spent some time there helping them landscape their home and went back to college to get my degree in Information Technology. In 98, I started work at Microsoft in Bellevue, Washington. Got tired of the weather and decided to leave for a sunnier climate. Made a blind move to Naples, Florida in Oct. 99. Got a job with Collier County as a Business Systems Analyst. Worked there until June 2007. Went out on my own to try Network Marketing. Big learning curve and fun at the same time. Then some misfortune with some family members in California, so I decided to help care for them. Spent the last year & a half out there. Came back to Florida, looked for a job, none to be found. Oct 2009 got the call from my sister and I am going back out to hel...Expand for more
p them. This time who knows how long and for the time being leaving Florida behind.
It is Nov 2012 andl it has been 3 years now caring for my nephew and Mom. Mom has Stage 4 Cancer and is fighting like a trooper. This has been a "Trail by Fire" journey with several mini crises. A bit of advice for anyone who might end up taking care of their parents, plan early while they are not preoccupied with their mortality. This way the fear does not undermine the planning process. Planning early will give you and your loved one the best opportunity for care that provides safety and best quality of life for their circumstances.
Mom passed in Nov 2013. The most difficult 7 years and also the most rewarding, as we were able to find joy in the midst of fighting cancer. You also learn a lot about what family means, it tests your resolve to focus your love on others, get out of ego and do everything you can to accept the present moment as it is. You don't have to like or approve it, just not fight with what is. Reality always wins 100% of the time.
In Feb 2015 I moved to Las Vegas. As an independent contractor I work from home for Artisan Coffee Group. A team of 6 work together from remote locations. We just finished a year long software development project in May 2016 and released a very innovative App for the Coffee Industry. It's something that's been very rewarding, from conception to release, 3 years in total with full say in all aspects. Now it's just the next phase of penetrating the market and hit our goal of $5 million annual reoccurring revenue from this app. Traveled more in 2015-2016 than the previous 15 years. On the Trade show and event circuit have visited, New York, Houston, Charleston, Chicago, Dublin Ire, & Atlanta. More coming for sure. It's a dream job working from home, takes some discipline and it is working just fine. Content with where I am and where I am headed and that's a good place to stay in.
