Robert's Story
Following graduation from AHS in 1966, I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to Hospital Administration at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. I also served a TDY assignment at Tan Son Nhut AFB in Saigon, Viet Nam. My education, employment and travel subsequently took me to two other corners of the country, starting in Coral Gables and Miami, Florida; Anchorage and Eagle River, Alaska; and finally Kirkland and Des Moines, Washington.
My two college degrees, one in Business Administration and the other in Education, were received from Florida International University, Miami. I was recruited by Coral Gables Federal Savings out of college and, after ten years, recruited by Home Savings & Loan as Senior Vice President in Anchorage. After living through too many months of darkness in Alaska, I left and settled in the Puget Sound area of Washington State, eventually ending up in Des Moines, WA, where I decided to take up local politics. After being encouraged to run for Des Moines City Council, I was elected to fi...Expand for more
ve consecutive terms (20 years) and finally decided to retire at the end of 2015. While on the City Council, I served 10 of the years as Mayor, was Chair of the Airport Communities Coalition (ACC) successfully seeking mitigation for the effects of a third runway at SeaTac Airport, and was a founding Board Member of SCORE (South Correctional Entity Jail), a new local misdemeanant jail for neighboring cities in South King County which is located in Des Moines. While on the City Council, I travelled to China twice, successfully recruiting investors to build a 4-star hotel in Des Moines in the middle of the recession, and setting up a Sister City Program with the City of Changle, China.
My hobbies include hunting, fishing, travelling, and gardening. I am a small arms expert with a current federal firearms license.
My next planned adventure is a 15-day cruise including stops in Aruba, Cartagena, Panama Canal, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Cabo San Lucas, and San Francisco.
ItâÂÂs been a good life. I would do it all over again!
