Robert's Story

Life Life has more than fair to me and my family. Cheryl and I have been married nearly 32 yrs. We have two sons - recently married Kevin 28 and Ryan 23. We have lived in Martinez ( home of John Muir AND the Martini!) 27 years. I am involved in real estate and Cheryl is an accountant for Contra Costa County. We built a home at Running Y Ranch, outside of Klamath Falls, OR. The plan is to relocate in 3 years when Cheryl retires. We have both been involved in non-profit groups for many years. When I hear people mention another Arroyo located nearby I'm reminded of the many incredible experiences I got to share with many of you. I hope all is well and good for all of you. Please call my cell if you are in the area - 925.212.6108. I would love to reconnect with my fellow knights. We'll be in Ithaca NY to attend Kevin's MBA graduation from Cornell University's SE Johnson School of Business during the June All-Class Reunion. I missed the 40th Reunion because of the wedding. Please post lotsa photos! I want to see how well we have aged. I may have white hair but I still have hair! I visit the Memorial site and sadly see many friends who have passed on. Afterward, aging doesn't seem nearly as bad. Please drop me a line so we can continue sharing good times...... School Started Kindergarten at Salem Hyde School in Syracuse NY in'54. My recent reconnection with a few SH friends that has opened up many rich and intense memories. Crushes on RP,BD, JD. Great school, teachers and friends; what a wonderful way to start your academic life. Next it was Rio Hondo School in Arcadia. East meets West. The Calif lifestyle was an adjustment for this easterner. Wished I had honed CA social skills better and quicker but that's hindsight. I was ready for Arroyo in '62. Four great years, with Band as the core of my attention. I have many life long friends developed in the Band Room. Being Drum Major my senior year still remains a great thrill. Because many people with different tasks collectively focused their thoughts and skills, our Knights Band was one of the finest groups in So Calif. What was viewed as a "chop" as a freshman became an envied organization during our senior year. Being part of such a quality group is...Expand for more
something I will always be most proud of. There were moments - like where on campus were you when told of John Kennedy's assassination? 20 year ago, I found that spot for me. For guys, the time going from not needing to shave to being draftable seemed like months not 4 years. We said goodbye to many good friends who never returned. We really grew up in every sense of the word. As we now watch a new generation grow, we better understand and appreciate our parents and grandparents efforts of instilling strong values in us. Now it is our turn to have more fun..... College After Arroyo, I attended Rio Hondo College to avoid the draft. I finally said to Selective Service Board - take me in September 1968. Many of my friends transferred to four year schools, so I went off for my two years of "education" in another direction and matured at least 5 years. I returned to school - Pasadena City College in summer of 1971 and received more A's and B's in four classes than first 2 years combined! Cleaned up the academic record and journeyed off to the Redwoods of Humboldt State. Although I was elated to obtain my BA in '74, the best time was August 1973 when I met my wife to be Cheryl. In 72/73 I lived in Eureka with Dale Bolton (Arroyo '67). I frequently hitch hiked to HSU. I always saw this battered green '71 VW with Humboldt decals in the rear window parked at Cutten School. Never never would that cute little coed ever stop and give me a lift. If she only knew she was refusing to give the father of her two future handsome sons a ride to school! We laugh about that now, but at the time it was a diffferent story.... Military I went to Ft Ord 10SEP68. Volunteered for RVN as a grunt. Not real smart! I ended up in Bad Kreuznach, Germany as a cashier. Fellow classmate Henry Rameriz was there also. I was able to travel throughout Europe. Imagine 6 three-day passes to Paris for less than $50 per trip. I couldn't get better that a C in French from Madame Nichtbach at Arroyo, but did just fine in the real world. I matured 5 years during my 1 year 11 month 29 day military career. With the GI Bill, I returned to school and received by BA, and bought my first house also. I still pray for those not as lucky as me....
