Robert's Story
Anyone remember Jody Loftus, Richard Maas, Melvin Pitchford, Robert Wickline, Skipper Spellers, Gerald Chancelor, Sandra Mayfield, Patracia Williams, Charlene Bell, Mrs. Redden (playground teacher); Mrs. Murphy (first grade teacher I think), Mrs Coston (History teacher??) These are a few Trinity Heights names I remember. Bob "Ish" Smith
Following Trinity Heights, I went to Boude Storey Junior High, and then Crozier Tech (so we could play under the legendary Coach Rosie Atkinson. Then I went to Central Junior College in McPherson, Kansas and on to Greenville College in Greenville, IL. Following my graduation from GC, I married Joanna Riggs and went directly to Southern Illinois University where I got a Masters in Health and Physical Education. Then I was hired by Taylor University in Upland, Indiana to coach baseball and teach in the physical education department. After three years there, I was offered the position to return to Greenville College (my alma mater) where I spent the next 40 years.....Expand for more
..first Heading up the Physical Education Department and coaching baseball (and basketball for part of the time). In 1970 I took two years off to get my PHD at Florida State University, where I had the opportunity to also coach the baseball team under Coach Jack Stallings. When I returned to Greeenville College I served two years as Assistant to the President; 18 year as VP for Institutional Advancement; and 6 years as President, before retiring in 2000. I had the joy of serving as President of the United States Baseball Federation from 1977-1990 and President of the International Baseball Association from 1980-1993. This gave me the joy of overseeing about 45 world tournaments and three Olympic baseball tournaments (1984.1988.1992). In retirement I have had the joy of overseeing the ministry of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in southern Illinois. I have two children and now six grandchildren. God is so good, and I have had a great life. I am thankful for a good start at Trinity Heights.
