Robert's Story

Life I joined the Air Force in Jan. '64. I was sent to the Defense Language Institute at Syracuse U. for a complete immersion in the Russian language. I was then sent to Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, TX for technical training. I was sent to Germany for a tour of duty, but before my tour had ended I was recruited by one of the "alphabet soup" government agencies and was transferred to them with the blessing of the USAF and went to Berlin. After I had enjoyed all I could stand with the government, I went into computer programming and systems analysis. I moved to Tampa in '71 and job hopped from Tampa to Orlando, where I met and married Susan Oberender, and finally to Miami Beach. Susan and I quit the rat race in '86 (the rats kept winning), sold all our furniture, the house and the rest of our "stuff". We moved aboard a 35' catamaran and started cruising the Keys, Bahamas, and finally cruised around the Caribbean until '99 when we returned to the U.S. We bought a place and moved ashore in 2000 when HARMONY went into the yard for a major refit. The old girl really needed to be spruced up. The plan was to turn the property into an income producer when we moved back aboard. Unfortunately our plans didn't work out. I resumed working as a computer consultant and Susan went back to dentistry. We took our first cruise,...Expand for more
to Alaska, aboard Princess Cruise Lines in 2002 and we discovered that having someone else watching the weather, doing the navigation, repairing broken equipment, and standing watches suited us just fine. We sold HARMONY in Aug. '04 about two weeks before Hurricane Charley came up the coast. What great timing! We remain "dirt dwellers" in Bradenton, FL with our two cats Waldo and Sam. We continue to use cruise lines for our sea time. We love to travel. Have been to Nova Scotia and rode the tidal bore in the Bay of Fundy. Talk about getting soaked! We returned to the southern Caribbean via cruise ship, but it just wasn't the same. We stopped at all the tourist ports, which was something we avoided when sailing. We toured the Canadian Rockies and Glacier National Park. We took a Baltic cruise with a 2 day stop in St. Petersburg. My Russian language skills are rusty, but not forgotten. St. Petersburg is a beautiful city and expensive. We celebrate our 30th anniversary with a 10-day cruise to the Panama Canal. Susan and I are both into photography and shoot with digital cameras. The only problem is we shoot indiscriminately and wind up with hundreds of exposures which must be culled after we return home. Susan does most of the Photoshop work and prints. Our walls look like the interior of a photo studio.
