Robert's Story

Life CHS-1966, Olympic College 2 years, Clemson Univ. Bach. of Architecture 1976 Suma Cum Laude, Texas A&M Master of Architecture 1979, Registered Architect 1981, Own practice 1981 - 1992, . Hi All, I retired at 53 as an architect. The last 5 years of my career were focused on Children's Hospitals. It was good work, but lots of issues with contractors. Some were downright corrupt. My career as an architect was fascinating, but not at all financially rewarding. I finished 5th out of 425 students in undergraduate school and 1st out of 35 getting my masters. Architects pay was way worse than you can imagine. For a few years I worked in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. I was good at it, but the pay was awful. Hence my early exit to retirement. I've become a Texan. Don't get to Washington any more. Parents passed away and I don't have cause to visit. My new lifestyle, being retired, involves traveling and lots of windsurfing. I live in Corpus Christi with my wife of 31 years, Sandra. We have been all over the US since retiring. She retired ...Expand for more
as a special ed school teacher in 2001. . She repairs kiteboarding kites and I repair windsurfing sails. Mostly, it's just work to keep us entertained and to give back to the community here. Some of the aspects of my life include 4 years in the Air Force, 1 in Vietnam. My hobby for 25 years was racing sailboats and I even built two in the 80's and was one of 5 yachtsman in the US nominated for a national yachtsman award in 1986. Once I finished 1st in a Regatta with 217 boats. In 1979 I did a motorcycle tour of the US, visited 42 states and traveled 18,000 miles. I designed nearly 350 buildings, I was in Washington DC wrapping up a visit to the Smithsonians on 911, was a judge at the World BBQ Championship in Las Vegas in 2004 and I volunteered in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina helping ready damaged schools for the return of the kids. Current news, plans are under way to move to Maui and build a dream home I've had in my head for some time. The move and the build are bucket list things! Bob Thompson thombizATyahooDOTcom
