Robert's Story
Hello Patricia. I hope you are doing well.
Life
I received a BA in mathematics from Hanover College and a Ph.D. in Biometry and Statistics from Emory University. I was a professor of biostatistics and chair of the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences, Jiann Ping Hsu College of Public Health, Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, Georgia. I taught experimental design, longitudinal data analysis, sampling theory and statistical methods in diagnostic medicine.
My research interests involve clinical trials and statistics applied to medical research. Some of my favorite work include observational studies in the early days of ECMO; insulin pulsatility studies and the advantage of multiple dosing over bolus injections of insulin; modeling cure rates for stage 2 breast cancer treatments; and of course my most recent work with cardiac index and examination of parameters to determine if the heart has the needed reserve for elderly to survive surgery. I seem to have come full circle as my work with cardiac index for frail elderly has taken a new direction. We are explor...Expand for more
ing the diagnostic value of cardiac index for low-birthweight babies (less than 1000 grams). I have posted a few pictures that were included in a scientific presentation on our work in this area. Since 2007, I have become involved with research in genomics and bio-markers for coronary artery disease. Just remember, keep the length of your telomeres as long as possible!
After living in Macon for 10 years, mecca of middle Georgia and hometown of Little Richard and Otis Redding, I finally relocated to Savannah (2003) and lived on Whitemarsh Island. My hobbies and interests include bicycling, deep sea fishing, Don Julio anejo tequila, particularly 1942, (I will not refuse Patron) and J.W. Dundee Honeybrown beer. Recently, I have developed a taste for Grey Goose but I still prefer Belvedere and Stoli's Gold when I can find it.

I am now professor emeritus of Biostatistics as I retired May 31, 2020 and relocated to New Mexico where I spend my time wood working. I can still be reached at my Georgia Southern email address: rvogel AT georgiasouthern DOT edu.
