Robert's Story

In 68, I enlisted in the Air Force. I served in Viet Nam for two years, while also taking courses with the Univ. of Maryland extension out of Tokyo that was on base. I went back to Nam in 73 working as a civilian. Working like that enabled me to live and work like that around the world. Three years in Germany (78-81), 15 months in Saudi Arabia (Mar. 87-June 88, even visiting the ancient city of Petra [Jordan]), two years Tokyo, and all over the U. S. from Florida north to New York west to California, north to Alaska and many places inbetween. In my travels I continued taking courses, studying physics, chemistry, astronomy, electronics (I needed this one to work on the military aircraft). During my travels I have visited and seen many sights and natural wonders. Right now I live at the family homestead where we called home since 1957. My interests in astronomy though originally starting in grade school at Center Twp. school with the teacher Mr. Rohr who taught science. But during one my flights back to. Viet Nam, I bought in San Francisco International airport, a book by Carl Sagan titled Intelligent Life in the Universe. I read it while flying West Bound across the Pacific. When I got back to Saigon, I started studying Astronomy bigtime. Other than a short time being married(not now, she divorced me after not liking the travel) my continuing and ever expanding interest in astronomy, with Agent Orange’s effects catching up, that is where I am. I have e...Expand for more
njoyed hiking up part of Mt. St. Helens, swimming in the Atlantic ocean, swimming in the Gulf of Aqaba while looking across the gulf at the Sinai, swimming in the Pacific in California and from the island of Guam during Northern winter time. I have enjoyed going half way up Mt. Fuji, even flying over Thailand, Cambodia, and Viet Nam during the war. I have partaken German wines straight from the vineyards. Overall it has been a good life, one I never imagined back when I was in Mr Meyers speech class or while some of us would talk and would sit eating in the school cafeteria. It would be nice to hear from you all, learning where life has taken you. Lived and worked at the Presidio in San Francisco, walked all around San Fransico, Anchorage, Alaska, walked many trails in Germany during the cold war, served in the Strategic Air Command maintaining the B-52 bombers of the nuclear deterrance force. Have travel back and forth across this country visiting many sites such as the Grand Canyon, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainer, Kennedy Space Center, Johnson Space Center, the National Air and Space Center and the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., and many other places in this country. How many of you can say with pride and honor say that they have walked some of the deserts of Saudi Arabia like the An Nafud or have gone swimming in the gulf of Aqaba while looking across the water at the coast of the Sinai. There is so much more to my life history. If interested just ask.
