Robert's Story

Life Most would recall me being art/music oriented while at Sunset High. I initially worked in hotel maintenance, then in underground construction, and as a forklift mechanic/building new lifts. Each stint was about 3 years. Finding being an employee wasn't fulfilling, I started a chimney sweeping/fireplace rebuilding business in the Bay Area. After 7 years and a lot of fun, I took on an offer to be involved on a world's first project in St. Louis, MO (on-site) on an automated parking system. Two years later, it was running and I left being an employee behind, once again. Now my art is my work. Since 1988, I've had a machine/welding/fab shop. My music is mainly classic rock on the shop sound system, and I play rarely. In the late 80's, I took up Alpine snowboarding and trained with a Nevada race team which had several World & Olympic competitors and champions. I never achieved that level (not enough time/too "old") of competition, but I did manage to place 11th in the World Downhill competition in 92'. That was a hell of a good time, but age was making it too risky, and I was trying to run a business! I created one patented product (6,070,698) which I still produce, and am named in another joint venture patented product sold in the excavation industry. I've married twice (mid-80's & mid 90's), both lasting a bit over 5 years each, but decidedly avoided having any children. In the late 90's, I started a hobby which is now known as poweredcanoe.com. With ...Expand for more
several evolutions of this concept, I.m saving any serious ventures with this until I'm too damn old to deal with the weight of my shop work. Vowing not to marry again, my girlfriend (previously married twice) and I agree that marriage is not an ideal goal. We're now 3 years together ("living in sin" and loving it!). She has a teen Son, and 3 grade school daughters (takes any possible desire for kids on my part...right out of the picture!). Neither of us are religious sorts. A new venture is now in the works and involves "farming" year-round tomatoes. I can't stand tasteless store-bought tomatoes, so their ya' go. We live at a 4,600 ft. elevation, so zero F. is common in Winter, making this a real challenge to refine. The future holds that we'll move to Penn Valley CA in the near future and once again be located away from a metro area (our area is growing too rapidly). I visit friends in the Bay Area often and can't manage to enjoy the traffic/crowded cities of the BA. I drove by Sunset, only to find it shut down. Oh well, such is life. I'm considering this classmates thing, if only to regain contact with my friends of the time. Lost touch with all while I headed into adult life. I have to laugh about myself as I was, but I enjoyed the events I experienced at any rate. Anyone who knew me can at least know I enjoyed growing up with all of you I knew during the school years. It's been a good ride all the way! Drop me a line if desired through the canoe site.
