Robert's Story
Life
Robert serves as a director on a number of venture-backed start-ups and non/not-for profit boards (including Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship and the Hiller Aviation Museum).
College
BS in Electrical Engineering (with a minor in Biochemistry) from Rice University.
MBA from Harvard University.
Workplace
Robert has a long history in venture capital and investing; most recently, he was a Founding Managing Partner of Rocket Ventures, an $80M early-stage venture capital firm focused on software, semiconductor and communications. His investments included FlyteComm, SmartDB, Financial Interactive, TriCN and ClairVoyante. As well, he served as the CEO of one of the portfolio companies, Financial Interactive.
Prior to co-founding Rocket Ventures, Mr. Winter founded The Winter Group which still provides investment and strategic consulting. Projects include:
X Acting as a technology investment advisor to various funds. One being a $500 million hedge fund where efforts led to over $100 million of investments in the technology sector. Returns exceeded 40% annually.

X Providing strategic consulting to both major corporations and entrepreneurial ventures in the areas of strategy, market, corporate development and investment funding. Assignments have included market competitive analysis (HP); strategic product assessment (IBM/Lotus); M&A and corporate partnering; venture spin-outs (Electric Power Research Institute¡XEPRI).
Earlier, Mr. Winter was a General Partner at Comdisco Ventures a venture capital affiliate of Comdisco, a $4 billion financial services and leasing company; and a Senior Associate at Canaan Partners, a $400+ million venture capital fund, where he also served as acting CEO of an optical components manufacturer. His investment returns exceeded 130% annually from 1994 to 2000.
X Deals included Endwave*, Network Appliance*, Positive Communications, Digital Generation Systems*, NeoMagic*, NVidia*, Peerless Logic*¡X most were bought or had an IPO*.
Mr. Winter has held senior marketing, business development and sales management positions at Hewlett-Packard, Informatics General (a $200 million software company in the early 1980s) and IBM.
