Roberta's Story

After high school I spent two semesters at Akron U. Yes, I was a Zip. I left school to care for my ill grandmother, who then passed away. During that time period, I also traveled with my parents to Mexico, where I stayed for 4 months. I spent 12 years working in dentistry, after being trained on the job when I was 18. Many of you know I was a punk rocker back then. I sang with several local bands, and was the promoter at The Bank on Main Street in downtown Akron. That's where I got my first taste of graphic design. In 1989 I moved to Lansing, MI. I went back to school and got a degree in graphic design. I've been in this industry for 14 years. I am currently a Production Artist for a marketing firm. I had a son in '92, and he's the best thing that's ever happened to me. In 2003, my son (Rudy) was nearly killed in a school bus accident. He suffered many broken bones and internal injuries, but the longest-lasting was a traumatic brain injury. Five years later, we are still frequenting HOPE Network, a brain injury rehabilitation facility here. I am currently an online advocate for the Brain Injury Assoc. of America, and have been in several focus groups to help them with their program materials. I am also a parent liaison for CARF, the Commission o...Expand for more
n Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. CARF reviews and grants accreditation services nationally and internationally on request of a facility or program. There are only nine parent liaisons in North America, and I am proud to be one. I feel strongly that after everything that has happened to my son, I must use what I have learned to help others in their recovery. Parents of special needs kids are in desperate need of understanding. It is difficult for others to comprehend the emotional trauma. Imagine having to relive a bad experience every day, knowing life, most likely, will never be the way it was. Brain and spinal cord injuries are sometimes undetectable, and that makes day-to-day functioning difficult. My son looks fine and gets great grades, but that part of his brain was uninjured. He has difficulty with abstract thought, slower processing speeds, and difficulty with his fine motor skills. He experiences uncontrollable rage, and can sometimes endanger himself or even me. He now has less facial expression. He sometimes shows inappropriate behavior in public. Please be considerate of those you don't know. They may have been to hell and back. As a single mom, let me say this has been a tough row to hoe, but I wouldn't trade a second of it.
